DMS students compete to help Delphi middle school students were challenged by their homeroom teachers, working in conjunction with the Parents Actively Committed to Education (PACE) group, to collect as many non-perishable food items as possible by Super Bowl Sunday. The challenge was issued Jan. 25 and was called the "Soup(er) Bowl Challenge" in honor of the big game. A total of 1,091 cans and items were collected in the few short days of the competition. All homerooms accepted the challenge and competed. Teacher Tonya Small's sixthgrade homeroom was victorious with a total of 539 items, which were donated to the Delphi Food Pantry. The winning homeroom students were treated to a Super Bowl Party. "My kids are very competitive," Small said. " "I feel good we got all the cans," homeroom winner Landon Meek said. But the winning homeroom students were not the only ones who felt like they accomplished a good thing. "It felt good to help people who maybe can't afford to get food," said 14 year-old Lukas Hunt from Alan McConnell's homeroom. The Delphi Food Pantry was also a winner in the competition. "This will sure help," food pantry board member and manager Bob Arney said. "The kids are to be congratulated. We need constant replenishment of food items, and we do have to by some food sometimes." |
