IVY Tech students provide free tax filing assistance

IRS-certified Ivy Tech accounting students will provide free tax help to qualified income tax filers now through April 14.

Students have been trained and certified under the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax (VITA) program. The program offers free assistance to filers with household incomes under $40,000 who cannot prepare their own tax returns.

Returns will be electronically submitted to the IRS at no cost. For joint returns, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Filers can expect to receive applicable tax refunds within seven to 14 days in most cases.

Students will complete a verification checklist before submitting the return. At the end of the program, students will evaluate their efforts and make recommendations for future programs.

Tax assistance will be available on the second floor of the County/College Library, located on the Ivy Tech campus, 3101S. Creasy Ln., in Lafayette.

Those who wish to file through the program must make an appointment by calling (765) 269-5848. More information is available at www.laf.ivytech.edu.
