Fishing for logs
Carroll County Highway Department employees cleared debris from the supports of Hamilton St. Bridge in Delphi last week. Logs were lifted from the water with an excavator (pictured) then cut or moved away from the bridge. Carroll County Highway Supervisor Ramzi Awwad said a winter with little snow has afforded the department an opportunity to focus attention on about 20 bridges slated for similar work since the latest round of inspections. "We add maintenance projects as we discover them during regular bridge inspections," Awwad explained. "Items requiring immediate attention are taken care of promptly, which was the case with Hamilton St. Bridge." Awwad said many newer bridges are designed so that no supports would cause interference with debris in waterways. The county highway department maintains all bridges in the county other than those on state roads. Comet photo by Kevin Schnepp
