Looking Back
Important Carroll County historic documents were retrieved from a dumpster at the courthouse late last week. Historical Museum curator Phyllis Moore, and museum employee Nancy Ringer saw two men carrying green boxes to a dumpster. Curious about the contents, they asked where the men got them. The workers said they had just finished clearing out a room off the auditor's office. Moore, who knew important documents were stored there, had a "panic attack." She hired the same two men to begin retrieving everything and taking it into the museum. Most of the documents are from the 1800s. 25 YEARS AGO A baby quilt made by the Brethren Home residents will be sent to Prince Charles and Princess Diana in anticipation of the birth of their royal heir. Mary Blue, activities director, will deliver the gift during an upcoming trip to the British Isles with her husband, Jerry, where they will visit their daughter, Mary Ann, who attends Harlaxton University. The residents will be picking dates for the birth of the baby with the winner receiving a gift from England. 50 YEARS AGO Ockley residents who have automatic furnaces, thought they were near the North Pole late Sunday, when a damaged power line went out of commission at 111:00 p.m. Sometime Monday morning, Public Service of Mulberry repaired the line, with zero weather hovering around. There were those who claimed they liked the 10 below weather that came Monday and it must be admitted that if you like plain cold weather, the day was almost ideal. People with cars that wouldn't function, those who watch their fuel bills closely, the owners of frozen water pipes, and those who just like more red in the thermometers weren't quite so pleased. For Rent: Two nicely furnished rooms. Phone 732. 75 YEARS AGO Well, it finally happened. Flora 23, Delphi 17. After four lean and hungry years a famished pack of Badgers feasted to their heart's content on Oracle meat. They out-hustled and outplayed an Oracle crew tired from week after week of strenuous games against the state's best teams. Undoubtedly, Flora played the better ball and while the Journal will always back the Oracles against the world still it seems good to see Flora back in the field with a team that can revive the old rivalry battles and pack the gyms to the last square inch. In the curtain raiser, the two second teams put on a great scrap with the Badger cubs emerging a 15-14 victor. 100 YEARS AGO There promises to be an exciting time in the commissioners' court next Monday when the people of Ockley will endeavor to prevent Joseph Hannell from securing a license to conduct a saloon at that place. A remonstrance has been secured to keep the license from being granted. On the other hand Hannell claims he will be successful, so in this condition the matter will be presented to the board. Ockely has had a saloon for several years. Over the saloon is a dance hall where public dances are held. Some of the dancers are said to frequent the saloon below and from too much "booze" several fights have occurred. It is also reported that a number of drunken brawls have recently taken place in the saloon and for these reasons the saloon is a menace to the community. |
