Winter Sports Summaries 7th Lady Oracles defeat Battleground The 7th grade Lady Oracles defeated the Battle Ground Tomahawks 37-14. In the "A" game Jordan Jargstorf led all scorers with 22, and Marlee Higgings added 7. Justin Alderman gets the defensive player of the game award with 6 steals. The Oracle "B" team lost a heart breaker 19-18. Lauren Kayser led all scorers with 8 points and Ashley Soper added 4. Delphi 8th grade girls record wins Delphi eighth grade girls beat Klondike Jan. 16 in two basketball games. In the 29-24 A-game win, scoring for Delphi were: Chanler Norman, Carli Rouhier and Randee Schultz, 6 points each; Brittani Rhodes, 5, Whitney Arion, 4, and Brittany Abbott, 2. Delphi won 22-20 in the B-game. Scoring was as follows: Trista Cox with 12 points; Megan Yates, 7; Chelsea Regan, 2; and Grace Mears, 1. Delphi won two games at Battle Ground on Jan. 18. In the A-game, Delphi scored 56 to Battle Ground's 6 points. Scoring for Delphi were: Arion, 15 points; Rhodes, 14; Abbott, 11; Norman, 10; and Rouhier, 6. Delphi won 12-10 in the B-game. Cox scored 5 points; Yates, 4; Randee Schultz, 2; and Grace Mears, 1. Carroll 7th improves to 10-4 Carroll's 7th grade Cougars won two out of three contests last week. The boys lost to a fine Logansport Lincoln squad 35-25. The young Cougars played their best defensive game against the talented Logan team. Tim Ruby led Carroll in scoring with 11 points. Mitchell Bradley and Blake Cromer split 8 rebounds. Chad Griffen had 3 steals. After playing their worst half of the season and trailing host Clinton Central by 7 at half-time, Carroll outscored its opponent by 14 in the second half to win 39-32. Despite fouling out three players and having the Bulldogs shoot 31 free throws, the Cougars hit 13 of 18 free throws to seal the win. Ruby, who hit 8 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter, led Carroll with 12 points. Brady Noonkester came off the bench to score 9. Griffen and Noonkester split 10 caroms and Blake Seward added 4. Griffen also had 4 assists and 3 steals. In a contest of county rivals, Carroll defeated Delphi in a nip and tuck contest 40-38. It was Delphi's inside game versus the host Cougars' outside shooting. Carroll hit 5 three pointers and were led by guards Griffen and Ruby with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Delphi's inside duo of Brown and Hawn had 19 and 10 points. Noonkester and Jeremy Huckstep split 8 rebounds for the Cougars, while Griffen had 5 steals. Carroll's record improved to 10-4. VS. LINCOLN: Ruby 11, Seward 4, Huckstep 2, Griffen 2, Downham 2, Atkisson 2, Bradley 2. VS. CLINTON CENTRAL: Ruby 12, Noonkester 9, Huckstep 5, Griffen 5, Cromer 2, Downham 1. VS. DELPHI: Griffen 15, Ruby 14, Noonkester 3, Downham 2, Seward 2, Huckstep 2, Bradley 2. B-team The Cougars B-team fell to 3-5 with a tough 27-26 loss to Clinton Central. Mitchel Bradley led a balanced attack with 7 points. He also had 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Wes Theike added 5 points, while Ricky Burns and Jeremy Hayes split 8 rebounds. VS. CLINTON CENTRAL: Bradley 7, Thieke 5, Atkisson 4, Downham 3, Burns 3, Hayes 2, Overholser 2. Special Olympics teams win 3 of 4 The Carroll County Rockets Special Olympics men's basketball team split a pair of games over the weekend. The Cougars and Comets also won. The Rockets defeated the White County Warriors 22-12. Ron Rice led the team in scoring with 10 points. Doug McCarty and Richard Goyer had 4 points each, while Jesse Cadwallader and Eric Bane added 2 each. In the 32-14 loss to the White County Lakers, McCarty had 8 points and Paul Knight 6. The Carroll County Cougars team easily defeated the Clinton County Eagles 32-21. After trailing at the half, the Cougars came back with a 16-point fourth quarter to win the game. Chuck Fry Jr. led the Cougars with 10 points. Aaron Hensley and Conner Wells had 8 points each, and Nick Martin added 6. The Carroll County Comets team easily defeated the White County Wildcats 23-8. Cary Walters led the Comets with 8 points. Diana Knight added 7, Jessie Knight 6 and Jessica Hartman 2. Delphi 8th continues win streak, wins Twin Lakes Invitational The Delphi 8th grade boys' basketball team won its second consecutive weekend tournament on Saturday, defeating Twin Lakes in a 34-31 thriller in the championship game of the Twin Lakes Invitational. The Oracles defeated Kokomo in the opening round game 52- 34. Delphi then came back home on Monday night and beat Clinton Prairie 44-40. After a slow start to the season which saw the Oracles face seven West Central Junior Conference opponents from the McCutcheon, Harrison and Lafayette Jeff school systems, Delphi has now won six-in-a-row, and seven of their last eight games to improve its overall record to 10-9 on the season. Against Roosevelt in the tournament championship, the Oracles were shutout during the 1st quarter and trailed 13-0 at the break. After Roosevelt scored the first bucket of the second quarter, Delphi outscored the Indians 11-3 over the remainder of the quarter to narrow the gap to 18-11 at the half. The Oracles kept even in the third quarter, before taking command with a 14-4 fourth quarter run to claim the championship. Delphi had many contributors led by Dustin Salyer, who finished with 19 points and six rebounds. Austin Hawn added 10 points for the Oracles and Tyler Smith hit two clutch free throws in a one-and-one situation in the waning seconds to help clinch the win. Against Kokomo in the first-round contest, Delphi took a 25-20 halftime lead into the locker room and dominated the second half for the 52-34 final score. The wide margin of victory allowed both teams to empty their benches in the second half, but the Oracles still placed three in double-figures with Hawn leading the way with 14 points and six assists. Salyer posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with six assists and five steals, while Cody Murray added 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. In the Clinton Prairie game, Delphi again jumped out to a 20-15 halftime lead, and withstood a see-saw contest in the fourth quarter before finally taking control for the 44-40 win. Salyer led the way on the inside with 24 points - including 13 in the final quarter - eight rebounds and six steals, while Hawn provided the outside scoring punch with 14 points, along with five rebounds and five assists. |
