Kremer breaks long-standing DCHS fly record

It has become almost expected for DCHS swimmer Shannon Kremer to set or re-set some kind of a record in her first event at each swim meet.

Kremer, a senior, surprised everyone at the meet against Rensselaer by coasting to an easy win in the 200-yard freestyle, well out of record time. But Kremer knew what was coming up later in the meet and was focusing on the event in which she wanted to break a record. The 100-yard butterfly record (1:06.70) has been held by Patty (Draper) Huddleston since 1986 and has eluded Kremer all season.

With the season winding down, Coach Brannan has begun to focus on team preparations for sectional and needed Kremer to start training for the distance events. She knew it was now or never if she wanted her sixth individual event record and proceeded to break the fly record with a time of 1:06.65.

She went on in the second meet of the week (against Carroll) to re-set her 500-yard freestyle record from last year as well.

In the 125-49 team loss to Rensselaer, Mara Burton was a double winner for the Oracles.

On the boys' side, it was another barnburner with the boys winning 92-90. Delphi was up by 16 points at the 500 freestyle, only to see Rensselaer tie up the score after the 100 breaststroke. The Oracles had to win the 400 freestyle relay for the team to be victorious. Leadoff Jeremy Sterrett's swim was dead even, Nick Force gave up two tenths of a second, while Kyle Price forged ahead to give anchor Andrew Burton a three second lead. Burton powered home to win by almost five seconds. Price was a quadruple winner and Burton a triple winner.

Hoosier Conference

Three DCHS swimmers were Hoosier Conference champions on Saturday. Kremer won the 500-yard freestyle and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a new school record time of 2:00.78.

Burton, a freshman, won the 100-yard freestyle and Price, a sophomore, won the 100-yard backstroke.

The girls' team placed sixth, while the boys came in third.
