M. Joan Mays
She was born Aug. 10, 1930, in Miami County to Wilmer and Larilla Fern Bayless Rogers. Her marriage was to Carl E. Mays in Bennetts Switch on Jan. 14, 1951, and he survives. They celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary the Sunday before her death. Mrs. Mays graduated from Chippewa High School in Wabash County in 1948. Early in life, she worked at the Singer Department Store in Peru as a clerk, then helped on the family farm. In 1979, she bought the Sundae Castle Restaurant in Delphi, and owned it until 1983. She and her husband opened CJ's Hallmark Shop in downtown Delphi in 1985. Mrs. Mays was a member of Radnor United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 30 years. She belonged to the Radnor Women of Faith, was a long-time Vacation Bible School teacher, played the organ and piano for many years, and was involved with a Bible study group. She was a 4-H leader for the Madison Township What's Cookin' club, a member of the Delphi Chamber of Commerce, and a charter member and past president of the Dolly Madison Extension Homemakers Club. Mrs. Mays enjoyed cooking, flower arranging, Purdue University men's basketball, and Colts football. She also loved attending her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's activities. Surviving are four daughters, twins Judy Smith (husband: Steve) and Janet Resler (husband: Robert), all of Delphi, Mary Jo Meek (husband: Jim) of Delphi and Linda Barnett (husband: Steve) of Rossville; a son, Roger Mays (wife: Alida) of Delphi; 15 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. A brother, Robert, preceded her in death. Services were held Jan. 20 at Radnor United Methodist Church. The Rev. Phil Emerson, the Rev. Peggy Good and the Rev. Eric Stoops officiated. Burial was at Zion Citizens Cemetery in Carroll County. Memorials may be made to Radnor United Methodist Church. Abbott Funeral Home, Delphi, was in charge of arrangements. |
