Carroll hires architect for $450,000 project
By Jennifer Archibald

Carroll School Board approved an architect for a $450,000 roofing and swimming pool project at its Jan. 16 meeting.

The architectural firm of Barton Coe-Vilamaa was hired for $25,000 to design the specifications and oversee construction.

Areas designated for re-roofing are over the main and auxiliary gyms.

Work on the pool will account for about 75 percent of the total project cost. Pool upgrades will include replacing the guttering around the pool, with stainless steel; replacing the filtering system, lining the piping, re-grouting, replacing equipment in the equipment room, and replacing ladders and other metal pieces.

Superintendent John Sayers said the re-roofing will be bid first - by the end of this month - and the pool work should go to bid in another month.

The corporation will take out a one-year loan to pay for the total project.

Interim athletic director

The board approved the hiring of Bob Cornell as a parttime interim athletic director. He formerly was athletic director at Manchester College, was a high school football coach, and retired as a high school principal at Twin Lakes. He will serve as AD this semester, possibly until the end of the school year.

Others hired were Bill Dillon as assistant baseball coach and Matt Stump as junior high track coach (one of three).

Carroll Elementary Principal Carolyn O'Connell mentioned special activities at the school including a star lab, an artistin residence who will guide students in creating their own individual books, and a "Lights, Camera, Action" convocation on TV/movie production.

A cash tuition request for this semester was approved for Allison Nelson, a sixth grader.

Textbook committee

Members of the CES 2006- 2007 textbook adoption committee are: Parents, Shelly Wiles, Michelle Wagoner, Bonnie Kuns, Tresa Leazenby, and Kris Brickhouse; teachers, Jacklyn Williams, Kathy Northcutt, Sandy Kistler, Matt Benner, Cathy Ayres, Nancy Sabatini, Kara Burrous, Kellie Strong, and Kathy Shuler; administrators, Natalie McQuade and Carolyn O'Connell.

Two requests were approved for facility usage: Girl Scout and Brownie Troop 1149 will meet on Fridays at Carroll Elementary School, and Indiana Magic (girls fast pitch softball) will use the high school main gym on Sundays through March.

The following conference and field trip requests were approved:

+ Natalie McQuade, Transporting Students with Disabilities on the School Bus Overview of Special Needs Transportation Conference, Jan. 9 in Indianapolis.

+ Myra Compton and Tina Miller, Region 3 Title I Network meeting, Jan. 22 in Greencastle.

+ Jacklyn Williams and Carolyn O'Connell, Full Day Kindergarten Committee meeting, Jan. 23 at Wabash Valley Center.

+ Melissa Keown, Moodles for Beginners Conference, Jan. 24 in Lafayette.

+ Don Shively and Makay Adams, Hasti Conference, Feb. 8-9 in Indianapolis.

+ Jenelle Gish, Keeping Students Actively Engaged in Reading Activities While You Teach Small Groups Conference (grades 3-6), Feb. 21 in Indianapolis.

+ Sandy Kistler and Jacklyn Williams, Leaping Into Learning Centers Conference, March 1 in Indianapolis.

+ Natalie McQuade, Transporting Students with Disabilities on the School Bus/ Wheelchair Lift Bus, March 6 in Indianapolis.

Sayers said he asked Mc- Quade to attend the two transportation meetings because the number of students with disabilities that the corporation transports has about doubled.

A vote on school bus bids was tabled until the next board meeting, which will be Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Administration Building.
