Reserve deputies take the oath
Carroll County Sheriff Tony Burns performed the annual swearing-in ceremony for the department's reserve deputies on Jan. 10. Flora Town Marshal Paul Redmon, a reserve deputy since December 2004, said he enjoys the duties and his goal is to help the department. "I don't know how long I'll be able to cover both, because Flora comes first," he said. Eighteen-year veteran Deputy Scott Pearson said, "You have to be dedicated to do this, but I consider it an enjoyable activity." Reservists take approximately 300 hours of classroom training plus hands-on jailer, dispatch and patrol training. "Reserve deputies gives us the ability to put more manpower out on the road and provide more service to the community," Burns said. "I want to rebuild the reserve program. We are allowed 15 officers and only have eight right now. If we are at full force, we can have two men in a car out there at night."
