Charles E. Geheb

Charles E. Geheb, 83, formerly of D e l p h i passed away Jan. 15, 2007, at 3:25 p.m. at St. E l i z a b e t Healthcare Center, Delphi. He had been a resident there since Sept. 14, 2006.

Mr. Geheb was born Sept. 20, 1923, in Marshall, Ill., to Carl and Nellie Davisson Geheb. His marriage was to Mary M. Reasor in Marshall on June 2, 1948. She preceded him in death Oct. 4, 2002.

Mr. Geheb was a 1940 graduate of Marshall High School. He received his B.S. in Education from Indiana State University in 1947, his first Masters degree in science from Purdue University in 1953 and a Masters degree in chemistry in 1961.

He was a World War II Air Force veteran, serving in the South Pacific, as a navigator on a B-29 bomber stationed in Guam from 1942 to 1945. He then served 28 years with the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel in 1973.

Mr. Geheb taught chemistry, physics and advanced math at Delphi Community High School for 43 years, retiring in 1990. He was a four-year member of a steering committee for the Regional Science Fairs, and presented sciencerelated papers at eight Indiana colleges and universities and three times to the Indiana State Teachers Association.

In 1970, he was part of an eight-member committee that wrote "Source Book for Science" for UNESCO during a 10-day workshop at the University of Maryland, published in 27 languages. Several of his students were involved with science talent research, with five going on to national and international science fairs.

Mr. Geheb was very active with the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and served in various capacities at Delphi high school and at higher levels. He was the Delphi high school charter sponsor of the science and math clubs and a co-sponsor of the Academic Decathlon Team at Delphi.

Mr. Geheb co-wrote a text for basic chemistry. It was never published, but he used it at Delphi high school in his teaching.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delphi. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, a 19- year member and past president of the Parish Council, and three-year member of the Diocian Council of Catholic Mentors, serving two years as treasurer. He was a Sunday School teacher at the church for 10 years.

He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Air Force Retired Officers Association. He was a member and past president of Delphi Lions Club, a member of Delphi American Legion Post #75, and an eight-year member of the Delphi Airport Commission. He was involved with judging weather and geology at the Carroll County 4-H Fair for many years.

Mr. Geheb received the Samuel Milroy Award from the Delphi Chamber of Commerce and was recipient of the first American Legion Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. He was the voice of the Oracles, announcing basketball and football games for the high school for over 42 years.

Surviving are a son, Ed Geheb (wife: Vicki) of Burlington; a daughter, Mary Helms (husband: Dale) of Lafayette; five grandchildren, Chad Geheb (wife: Carrie), Ryan Helms, Matt Helms, Kristen Geheb and Kyle Geheb; and three great-grandchildren, Camryn, Charles Jackson and Corryn Geheb.

An infant daughter, Deanna Lynn, and one sister, Lucille, preceded him in death.

Friends may call today, Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Abbott Funeral Home, Delphi, with rosary service at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with Father Peter Vanderkolk officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Delphi, with full military rites by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honor Guard.
