Looking Back
A petition requesting that Clay Township merge with Delphi Public Library has been circulated by Clay Township resident Dianne Lawson. The merger would allow residents of Clay Township full service of the library. Lawson noted that the petition, which now carries 223 signatures, was signed by a real cross section of area residents and that over 80 percent of the people who voted in the last general election chose to sign the petition in favor of the merger. If the merger is successful, service will begin immediately, however, the tax for library service will not be due until 1998 tax statements are distributed. 25 YEARS AGO Fire units from Carroll County assisted the Rossville Fire Department in fighting a blaze Monday night which destroyed a large hog confinement building and about 1,100 hogs on the Harold Meador farm, located on the Clinton Carroll County line. Seven departments including Flora, Burlington and Cutler fought the blaze for six hours. According to fire officials the loss could total $500,000. Camden Elementary students took to the swings even though temperatures had dropped to the low teens on Thursday. Thursday's temperatures seemed like a heat wave after record low temperatures were set over the weekend by an arctic cold front. 50 YEARS AGO Figures in the offices of City Clerk Jesse Patrick reveal that collections from parking meters in Delphi amounted to $8,216.68 during 1956. The balance at the beginning of the year 1956 was $5,108.14. From this total of $13,324.82, there was $4,954.48 expended for street improvement, $1,640,00 payment on meters and $5,005.90 in maintenance, leaving a present balance of $1,724.44. The maintenance includes the salary of one policeman, repairs on meters and posts, purchase of coin wrappers and miscellaneous items. The $779.20 collected in fines goes into the city's general fund. 75 YEARS AGO Starting Friday and Saturday at the State Theatre-12 weeks of breathless thrills! Indians! Hordes of blood-thirsty savages taking part in the serial that will make you stand up and cheer! BUFFALO BILL battling his way through the redskins to make the West safe for civilization! Action every minute! Thrills by the score! Excitement such as you've never even hoped to see. All a living, speeding part of this monster chapter-play whose every episode has more action than any feature. Don't miss a single chapter. 100 YEARS AGO Charles McMahan, one of the Flora hucksters, had an upset with his bobsleds while coming up the Camden hill Monday and suffered the loss of about 45 dozen eggs, which were broken. Mr. McMahan had a narrow escape, jumping from the "cab" of the wagon just in time to escape unhurt. In the upset the front part of the bobs was wrenched from the rear portion and the team which took down the road was captured by E.M. Cripe, 1 1/2 miles south of the wreck. The damage was about $10. |
