July 5 – Fifteen young women will vie for the title of Miss Carroll County 2006… The 2006 version of the Carroll County 4- H Fair at Flora will open with a carnival and Little Miss & Mister Pageant… Carroll County Area Plan Commission members decided to buckle down and thrash out an interim amended zoning ordinance… The Dr. Frankenstein’s Haunted Castle attraction and Indiana Beach Amusement and Camp Resort has been awarded the distinction of “#1 Favorite Walkthrough Attraction by the Darkride and Funhouse Enthusiasts… Heidi Olson will travel to Romania to teach violin lessons in an orphanage… An independent film crew recently used the Carroll County Courthouse to shoot a scene for the upcoming movie, “Postpartum,” a psychological thriller… Photographer Alan McConnell of Delphi will be the featured artist for July at the Lafayette Renaissance Academy.

July 12 – Hannah Elizabeth Mears is crowned Miss Carroll County 2006… Wilson Bridge may re-open temporarily… As progress is made toward the construction of the senior housing project in Delphi, various details need to be discussed and decided before the project reaches fruition… Flora Town Council voted unanimously to have Steven C. Egly of Sunshine Publishing digitize four town ordinance books… A thief in an orange mask robbed Mara-Mart at gunpoint… The Carroll County Highway Department is money ahead because of a program offered by the federal government.

July 19 – Forty-seven workers have been laid off from Peters- Revington in Delphi… Delphi Police Officer Justin Wilson saved the life of a baby when he reached the child before the ambulance arrived… Carroll County’s Area Plan Commission is comprised of six appointed and two ex officio county-resident members… The American Legion’s World War I tradition of hanging a blue banner in the window of families with members in the military is being revived locally to call attention to those currently serving our country… A local crew has been assessing and completing needed restoration work on the former Pulaski County #31 iron bridge… Camp Tecumseh hits record high camper numbers… Faith Wellbaum and Jacob Warren were crowned Carroll Little Miss and Mister during pre-fair events… For the third month in a row, Carroll County will pay more to handle stray and unwanted cats than dogs… Delphi’s Junior League baseball team won the Town & Country Semi-State Tournament.

July 26 – Carroll County Relay for Life raised $33,006 for the American Cancer Society… County officials are faced with an out-dated jail facility not properly maintained over the years… Barry Stone is named Delphi Community School Corporation’s new principal… Dr. Brian Doggett learned two months ago that his medical clinic on Armory Road was on Arnett Clinic’s chopping block… Carroll School Board hired two new teachers and accepted two resignations… The WPSA PowerSports ATV tour came to Carroll County… Gary Parrett has announced the closing of Center Street Grill in Flora.

August 2 – Delphi Community School Corporation hired a new superintendent, Ralph Walker, and a new Middle School principal, Bob DeLaRosa… The 151st Carroll County Old Settlers Festival will be on the courthouse square Wednesday through Saturday… Burlington Fire Department is looking to team up with Carroll County Emergency Medical Service for a better, more reliable service for Burlington area residents… Crystal Field picks up after litterbugs on Hwy. 29/421… Joel and Michelle Redmon are the owners and operators of a new Camden business, J&M Outdoors… Ann Brown of Flora was recognized Friday as a 2006 Tribute to Women honoree at the Indiana Federation of Republican Women’s Dinner… Burlington Town Office will be relocating to the former Brewster Insurance Office.

August 9 – Hoping to delay asphalt cost increases later on this year or early next year, Carroll County Highway Supervisor Ramzi Awwad got the go-ahead from commissioners to immediately begin implementation of phase II of the 2006 road plan… A volunteer group of First Responders organizes in Deer Creek… Flora Town Council approved the purchase of a fifth warning siren for the town at Monday night’s council meeting… For the second time in a little less than a month, Carroll Council members upheld their promise to department heads to hold special meetings to discuss replacements for vacated personnel positions… Carroll School Board has instructed school attorney Miriam Robeson to draft a policy regarding student use of supplements… Dick Krieg Motors celebrates 20 years in Delphi.

August 16 – Delphi Airport takes the first step to extend its runway… Carroll County YMCA is hosting a Back-to-School clothes exchange… Kristen Arnett has opened Kristen’s Homemade Delights in Burlington… Fred Humes of Flora is celebrating his 100th birthday on Aug. 21… Adam Bonner, a senior at Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School, received top honors at the 2006 Indiana State Fair for his demostration, winning a trip to Washington, D.C… The 2007 Carroll County Heritage Award winners included Carroll Manor, Ralph Rohrabaugh, Lowell and Janice Johnson, and Steve and Debbie Siwinski.

August 23 – The firm hired for a feasibility study to develop a connector route between existing SR 75 and the Hoosier Heartland Highway heard concerns from county residents as the study was explained Monday night at a county commissioner’s meeting… Carroll school board approved the purchase of 29 Dell computers for the junior-senior high school business lab… Frances Draper received an award at the State Fair last week for being named Area IV Senior Volunteer of the Year… Deputy Walt Raderstorf has joined the Carroll County Sheriff’s Dept… Carolyn Pearson of Delphi has received the Outstanding Blood Donor Award from the American Red Cross… A new book by Earl L. Conn, titled “My Indiana, 101 Places to See,” includes the Wabash & Erie Canal Conference & Interpretive Center in Delphi.

August 30 – St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center in Delphi celebrated 20 years of service to Carroll County with a special celebration last week… Flora Kiwanis Club is sponsoring Touch A Fleet for the second year… Delphi Oracles held on to the Bacon Bowl title with an easy 34-6 victory over county-rival Carroll Friday night… Paige Keys was crowned Miss Camden and will reign over Fall Festival a c t i v i t i e s … Camden’s Little Miss and Mister are Alexis Melendez and Noah Abbott… Jim Neptune of Burlington received his 50- year pin at the annual convention of the Indiana Funeral Directors Ass o c i a t i o n … The name and logo of Sand Ridge Bank was retired on Aug. 28. The local bank will now operate under the unified brand of First Financial Bank, N.A.

September 6 – The Camden- Jackson Township Public Library Garden will be formally dedicated Saturday m o r n i n g … Representatives from the p r o p o s e d mega-dairy in D e m o c r a t Township visited the commissioners’ meeting to explain their project… A new brochure about Carroll County, produced by Carroll County Heritage Tourism, will be available this week… Opponents to the proposed countylevied property tax increase visited the Carroll County Council meeting to address concerns with the county leaders… Entertainment at the Camden Fall Festival Saturday will feature Justin Tyme, Sharayah Red Elk, Resurrection, Chalisa Keaton, Neon Dove, and Insomnia… Kenneth Berkshire, Delphi, received a 13- gallon pin when the Red Cross Bloodmobile visited Flora in August… Carroll won three team trophies at the Caston Cross Country Invitational.

September 13 – Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Inc. will receive a prestigious national award this month from the American Association for State and Local History… Flora Town Marshal Paul Redmon told the Flora Town Council that something must be done about the mold problem at the police station. The council instructed Redmon to move his department to the Fireside Room so that the building can be evaluated… Flora Presbyterian Church will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Sunday with a special Homecoming celebration and catered dinner… Flora Psi Otes of the Year are Miriam Robeson and Deb Raderstorf… Jim and Kelli Snowberger of Delphi have been inducted into the U.S. International Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and Jim has been inducted into the 2006 World Martial Arts Hall of Fame… Will Abdon of Flora, a student at the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute in Pittsburg, will be cooking for the PGA Classic Golf Tour in Pittsburgh, Pa… Carroll County Council on Aging and CDC Resources were awarded INDOT funds to purchase vehicles and related equipment to transport the elderly and disabled…

September 20 – Rockfield will celebrate its 150-year history on Sept. 23 at the Rock Creek Township Community Center… After careful thought and deliberation, the Carroll County Council voted unanimously to grant no salary increases in 2007 for county employees… First place winners in Burlington Fall Festival contests were: Aubree Herron, queen; Ryan Atkisson and Jade Jackson, prince and princess; and Sterlin Miller, Cutie Contest winner… Kristen Hahn was crowned Delphi Community High School homecoming queen… For the second year in a row, Carroll’s soccer team has won the Caston tourney.

September 27 – Kathy Shank and Carole Miller were recognized for 35 years of state employment at the Governor’s Long Term Employee reception in Indianapolis… Phyllis Moore, an Indiana state registered historian and the curator of the Carroll County Historical Museum, is recognized for 20 years of volunteer service on behalf of Indiana County Historian Program, the Indiana Historical Society, and the Indiana Historical Bureau… Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Inc. has received a $10,000 grant from the Efroymson Fund – a family trust administered by Central Indiana Community Foundation. The funds will go toward restoration of a one-of-akind Winamac/Stearns truss iron bridge that the association moved to Delphi from Pulaski County… Connie Hughes, parish nurse for Delphi United Methodist Church, has acquired two defibrillators for her congregation through a Greater Lafayette Health Services’ Revive and Survive Grant.

October 4 – Carroll Elementary and Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School are two of 20 Indiana schools to receive the 2006 Indiana Gold Star School Counseling Award… The Flora Community Center will be out of commission for a few weeks after a fire Monday evening left the building with smoke and water damage… Carroll’s homecoming king and queen are Brandon Walters and Courtney Rinehart.

October 11 - At the Carroll School Corp. Public Forum, Superintendent John Sayers said corporation enrollment is down 16 from last year and stands at 1,123.5 (with kindergarten students counting as half)… Cindy (Oilar) Harmon will soon be opening a law office in Flora… Dick N. Bishop of Flora received an award from the Indiana State Bar Association for reaching a milestone of 50 years as an attorney at law… United States Air Force Senior Airman Zachari Ayres, stationed in Mosul, Iraq, sends an email to the Comet for the newspaper’s continuing feature, “Staying Connected.”… Their first place finish at the South Adams Invitational moved Carroll girls cross country team into the top spot in the latest edition of the HoosierAuthority.com small school poll. This is the first time ever for the girls to achieve the number one ranking.

October 18 – Cynthia Stout, associate member of the Charles Carroll Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, was honored at a reception for being the new State Regent of Indiana, the highest DAR office in the state… For the first time in Carroll’s history, a girls’ team has qualified to compete at the semi-state level… Delphi boys and girls cross country teams have qualified for the regional.

October 25 – In a special Monday morning meeting, commissioners approved the submission of a grant to Homeland Security for just over $44,516 to purchase and install 10 surveillance cameras for various locations in the courthouse… Carroll, Camden, and Hillcrest elementary schools are all celebrating Red Ribbon week, which emphasizes saying “No” to drugs… Carol Coon was named principal at Camden Elementary School, replacing Debby Williams.

November 1 – “We Tip Our Hats Off to Our Community” was the slogan of the serviceminded Hillcrest Elementary School event that culminated a busy Red Ribbon Week… Approximately 100 residents attended a hearing Friday morning by the Indiana Department of Government Finance… Harry Mohler of Rossville will turn 100 on Nov. 10…The Fall General Election will be Nov. 7… Abigail Germond’s first professional showing of her sketches was held at the Tippecanoe Arts Federation last Friday.

November 8 – Tricia L. Thompson will be Carroll County’s new prosecuting attorney… A community project has been started to raise money for a new and sturdier flag pole at Maple Lawn Cemetery… The Great American Librarians team took first place in the first Scrabble Scrimmage for Literary… Mike and Judy Hoffman will be the grand marshals of Flora’s holiday parade on Saturday… Kevin Schnepp of rural Carroll County has joined the staff of the Carroll County Comet… Carroll FFA was ranked a 3-Star FFA Chapter at the 79th annual convention… Bill Schock announced his retirement as chief of the Delphi Tri- Township Volunteer Fire Dept. at Monday night’s Delphi City Council meeting.

November 15 – The Reed Case House at Canal Park in Delphi was recently presented the 2006 Preservation Plaque form the Wabash Valley Trust for Historic Preservation… Area IV Development Corporation held a ceremonial ground breaking for the senior housing project, Water Tower Place, last Wednesday in Delphi… Salin Bank won the award for the Best Thanksgiving Float in Flora’s Holiday Parade on Saturday… Camden Elementary students recently worked on fall clean-up projects in the community… Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Smith issued a mandate, filed Nov. 9 in Carroll Superior Court, which ordered the council to abide by his request for funds.

November 22 – Randy Strasser has announced that he will file to run as the Democrat candidate for mayor of Delphi in the primary… Kampen Lodge, a 17,000-square foot activity center, is now under construction at Camp Tecumseh YMCA. It is the final project in a $7 million dollar expansion of the camp and outdoor center… The official launch of the new Town of Camden web site, www.townofcamden.org, was held during the Camden Town Council meeting Nov. 15… A one-room log schoolhouse has been added to the village at Canal Park in Delphi… Bringhurst teen Tyler Jenkins has been awarded Boy Scouting’s highest honor, Eagle Scout… Bush Veterinary Services, P.C., in Flora and Brewster Insurance in Burlington were honored recently with the Governor’s Half Century Business Awards.

November 29 – Republican Party Chairman Tom Gray filed a petition with the county clerk requesting a recount in the Liberty and Jackson townships advisory board races… Bill Schooler will be the marshal for Saturday’s Delphi Christmas Parade… Carroll County Council decided in a split vote to strike a compromise with Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Smith to settle a personnel issue without going through litigation… Carroll School Board has established a policy prohibiting the use of performance enhancing supplements… Carol Dickman has opened the Secret Garden Studio on Main Street in Delphi.

December 6 – The City of Delphi and the Town of Flora have adopted health savings plans for employees as a way to curb rising healthcare costs… A proposed jail facility master plan was presented to the county commissioners at their meeting Monday… Mary McCarty is the winner of the Pete Award, presented annually by the Flora Lions Club… Master Barber Al Rossi has purchased the Town & Country Barber Shop in Delphi from Milt Pitty… Several county residents protested the proposed county traffic ordinance, published for the first time in last week’s Comet.

December 13 – Delphi Community School Board announced Monday night that public input will be sought about facility needs in the coming months… Carroll Elementary School is re-enforcing positive behavior in its students by giving a weekly BRAG Award… The Liberty Township recount ends in tie… Carroll County Economic Development Corp. and Carroll County Chamber of Commerce presented Community Enhancement Awards to Dick Krieg Motors, Delphi, Fisher & Associates of Flora, Burlington Meats & Catering, and Camden-Jackson Township Public Library… Carroll County Farm Bureau was one of six county Farm Bureaus to be recognized for programs of outstanding merit at the annual state convention held Saturday.

December 20 – The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance issued a ruling Dec. 8 in favor of the Carroll County Council’s pursuit to levy a tax on real and personal property, beginning in 2006 and payable in 2007… The results of the Carroll County Jail study were presented Dec. 12… Beverly Overholser was named Camden Postmaster… Lisa Brown of Deer Creek was the grand prize winner in the Shop Flora 1st drawing.

December 27 – Carroll School Board gave non-certified personnel a pay raise at its Dec. 19 meeting…A petition drive was initiated to voice disapproval of the decision to close the TDS business office in Camden… Circuit Court Judge Donald Currie swore in newly elected public officials on Dec. 22… John Patterson will be the new chief of the Delphi Tri-Township Volunteer Fire Dept. beginning Jan. 1… The City of Delphi plans to build a skateboard park at Riley Annex.
