Words of appreciation for twelve years of service were bestowed upon Commissioner Bill Duff during his last meeting as a Carroll County Commissioner on Dec. 27. The special session was scheduled to dispense with any old business and approve the last claims of the 1996 business year.
Duff passed the torch to new Commissioner Donald Rhine, as items of new business were brought before the Commissioners for discussion.

Several Delphi people were searching for and inquiring about the big explosion Saturday afternoon. Some thought their own furnace had exploded, others looked to see which neighbors’ house may have been blown to bits, others checked on the filling stations and accusations were pointed at concerns for using over charges of dynamite. Houses shook, plastering cracked and one local business man who had been called to repair a furnace, arrived at the home just as the “explosion” occurred and thinking he
had arrived too late, rushed to the furnace room with his fire extinguisher, only to find everything spic and span. The son rushed from his upstairs bedroom, where he saw the ceiling crack, thinking too, that the furnace had exploded.
Later it was deducted that a low flying jet had “cracked the sound barrier”, causing the earth-shaking explosion. Other homes also reported plaster damage and frayed nerves.

The new school at Pittsburg in Tippecanoe township was used Wednesday for the first time, when approximately 100 pupils gathered there to begin their semester’s work.
The building was built under the direction of Frank Riley, township trustee, and cost about 430,000 without one cent of graft. It is said to be one of the finest township buildings in the state. The building is built of brick and stone. The main floor has four classrooms, toilets for boys and girls, and separate toilets for pupils of the primary room; also 98 lockers, a supply room and rest room. Drinking fountains are in the wide hall which divides the main floor. In the basement is the gymnasium or assembly room, with 144 metal seats; also a stage with foot lights and a kitchen with cafeteria serving shelf.
