The loud whistling signals, the conductor calling out to passengers, steam pouring from the engine - these are just a few of the sights and sounds of the bygone era of traveling by train. Model train devotees help bring back that experience in minute detail. Doug Howard, model train enthusiast, has a large collection of model trains that will be displayed in the library to help celebrate National Railroad Month, celebrated every November.
Model railroading is a hobby in which rail transport systems are modeled at a reduced scale, or ratio. The scale models include rail vehicles (locomotives, rolling stock, streetcars, etc.), tracks, signaling, scenery (roads, buildings, vehicles, model figures, lights, and natural features such as streams, hills, canyons, etc.). The earliest forms of model railways are the 'carpet railways' which first appeared in the 1840s. Model trains are generally more realistic than toy trains.
The model railroad exhibition will be located in the display cabinets on the main floor of the library through November.
The next preschool storytime theme is "Kangaroos." We visit the land down under, where the animals with their own pockets live! Fun and stories begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday mornings.
Dial-a Story is available 24 hours a day, 967-3814.
