Lafayette ISP releases August statistics
      Troopers based out of the Indiana State Police at the Lafayette issued 1227 traffic citations and wrote 697 traffic warnings in August. Troopers also arrested 36 drunk drivers and made 80 criminal arrests. They issued 335 truck citations, made 66 commercial motor vehicle inspections, investigated 50 crash arrests, made 27 crash arrests, and had 111 calls for service.

Kids at their best
      It is easy to catch kids doing something wrong, but they are definitely doing something right, too. Last week you may have seen juniors and seniors out in Carroll County doing community service. These are students who had already passed the ISTEP test, and volunteered their time in the community while others were taking the test.

Temporary signal placed on S.R. 18/U.S. 421/S.R. 39
      As of Monday, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has placed temporary traffic lights on east and westbound State Road 18 (S.R. 18)/U.S. 421/State Road 39 (S.R. 39) for approximately one month. The temporary signal assists two-way traffic take turns traveling on one open lane around the construction zone.

Carroll school enrollment down
      Superintendent John Sayers announced enrollment figures at a regular Carroll School Board meeting Sept. 18. He said on official enrollment day, Sept. 14, the count was 1,113, down 10.5 from last year. Kindergarten students count half. He said there are 66 students in this year's kindergarten class.

      At the recent Carroll County Achievement Night, "I Dare You" awards were presented to Carissa Hicks and Kara Overholser. The "I Dare You" award is presented to 4-H members in their junior year who have shown outstanding leadership. Recipients are selected by the Carroll County 4-H Awards Committee. They each receive the book, "I Dare You.

County 4-H'ers win $1000 4-H scholarships
      Three Carroll County 4- H'ers each received a $1,000 4-H Scholarship at the Indiana 4-H Congress Scholarship luncheon on Sept. 22. The three recipients are: Rebecca Lytton in the Public Speaking/Demonstration category, Ann Mears in Horticulture, and Darren Paul in Sheep.

Drivers should beware of deer this fall
      As the days shorten, the chances of hitting a deer grows, so drivers need to be careful as fall approaches. Nearly 50 percent of all accidents involving white-tailed deer occur between October and December according to Chad Stewart, deer research biologist at the Department of Natural Resources. The most basic reason is the increase in deer activity.

National Banned Books Week to be celebrated by DPL
      As part of the Delphi Public Library's effort to publicize National Banned Books Week, it is holding book fairs and library programs at Barnes and Noble Book Store in Lafayette Sept. 30. On that day, members of the Red Brick Theater will perform dramatic readings from four books most frequently challenged in the United States.
