Lady Oracles tune-up for Sectional
Prior to Delphi's 3-0 victory over Fountain Central Monday night in the Class 2A North Montgomery Sectional, the Lady Oracles prepared for the postseason with a pair of wins over West Lafayette and Caston, after dropping a close one on the road last week at Clinton Prairie.
Against Caston
Delphi breezed through its final tune-up before Sectional with a 10-0 victory Friday night over an outmatched Caston team (7-16) in five innings.
The Lady Oracles started the game with three consecutive hits, including a double from lead-off hitter Kristina Barnard, who then scored on an RBI single to left from Kayla Yates. Amanda Schultz also singled sharply up the middle, but was left on base.
In the 2nd inning. Delphi sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring nine times on seven hits for all of the run support it would need.
The first nine batters reached base safely, led by Brittany Tyner, who had two hits in the inning, including a double to left and two RBIs.
Schultz (7-6) pitched the complete game two-hitter, striking out five and allowing only three base runners to earn the victory.
Yates had two hits and an RBI, while Schultz and Tyner each went 2-for-2. Erika Hawn added a double and two RBIs, with Brianne Stauffer and Leslie Kayser chipping in with RBI singles, Brittney Atwood's single rounded out the Oracles' 11-hit attack.
Against West Lafayette
The Lady Oracles closed out Hoosier Conference play with a 14-3 drubbing of West Lafayette (6-18) Thursday, improving their conference record to 7-5. The recipe for victory was a familiar one jump in front early, then put them away with one big inning.
Barnard started things again, drawing a lead-off walk, followed by consecutive singles from both Yates and Schultz, the latter scored Barnard for the early lead.
After tacking on three more runs in the 3rd inning with hits from Schultz, Leslie Kayser and an RBI single from Atwood, Delphi again erupted for 11 runs in the bottom-of-the-4th to put the game out of reach in five innings. This time, the Lady Oracles sent 16 batters to the plate, again with the first nine reaching base safely.
Schultz led the offensive barrage, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Barnard also went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Yates and Hawn both finished 2-of-3, including a Yates RBI, while Stauffer and Atwood each had two RBIs. Tyner and both Kaysers had hits to account for the 14 put on the board for Delphi, with both Kaysers adding an RBI.
Atwood took care of business on the mound with the complete game victory, her ninth win of the season.
At Clinton Prairie
The Lady Oracles were in this one until the very end, trailing 4-3 entering the 7th inning when Clinton Prairie (13-10), officially the visiting team but forced to play this one at home due to make-up scheduling conflicts, added three runs for the 7-3 final.
This time the Gophers jumped ahead with four runs in the top-of-the-1st, but Delphi struck back scoring two runs on consecutive walks to both Yates and Schultz, a sacrifice bunt from Stauffer and error at 3rd base off the bat of E. Kayser.
They would add one more in the 3rd as Stauffer singled and scored on a two-out RBI single from Tyner, but would get no closer.
Barnard went 2-of-4 with a double, while Stauffer finished 2-of-3. The lone remaining hit came from Hawn as the Oracles finished seven in the contest.
