Burlington approves additional repairs to Zook Lane
Burlington Town Council met May 9 and discussed road repairs and ordinance compliance.
Les Johnson reported that street paving will be done in June. His recommentation that several spot repairs along edges of Zook Lane be done at a cost of approximately $1,500 was approved. He said Zook Lane is in good condition other than needed edge repairs that should prolong the life of the road.
Johnson also reported that several street corners are being cut short, most likely from waste trucks causing pavement breakage and ruts in inside corners. He suggested a letter be sent to these companies to caution their drivers to be more careful.
It was brought up that there are dumpsters in alley ways and in the street right-of-way at one location that is a safety hazard. Town attorney Anne Briggs was instructed to send a letter to both business owners and waste companies requesting corrective action.
Marshal Jill Hammond reported that letters have been sent to some residents requesting compliance with Ordinance 1984-2 pertaining to unlicensed vehicles. To date, most have complied. The marshal was instructed to cite non-compliant residents after a reasonable time.
Briggs recently updated Camden's ordinance on unlicensed vehicles and distributed to the Council copies of that ordinance, current statutes and backup information for review. Following discussion, Briggs cautioned the council against removal of any vehicles, but supported citing anyone not in compliance with the current ordinance.
Clerk-Treasurer Tammy Dyer reported that several yard maintenance letters had been mailed to residents. She said all had complied except one and the town has taken action on the one exception.
Council will be reviewing the leaf burn ban. As a result of the IDEM grant for the leaf vacuum, it will be necessary to eliminate other types of burning in order to comply with state law.
Carroll County Economic Development Director Daryl Smith was present to give a brief update on the recent county-wide marketing strategy meeting. He said he would like to attend a future Council meeting to have a detailed discussion of economic development efforts in Carroll County and the town's ideas for possible future development.
President Dick Davis said that he represented Burlington at the marketing strategy meeting and would also be attending an interest group interview for the Carroll County Comprehensive Area Plan.
Larry Sedwick requested financial assistance for grant writing education for a private citizen who could then apply for grants for both town and community purposes. Dyer said that the Indiana State Board of Accounts allows payment for education of town employees but taxpayer monies cannot be used for private individuals. The Council expressed its appreciation to Sedwick for his efforts to help the town.
The Council agreed that Creek Run Environmental will pay a flat $200 each for three separate events of flushing treated water into wastewater lines at the Mara Mart property.
The June monthly business meeting will be rescheduled to Monday, June 4, 2007 at 7 p.m. due to required State Board of Accounts schooling.
