Damage done

2007-04-25 / Opinions & Letters

In the April 11 Comet there was an article about the Tammy Birdsell death investigation, including a statement from Kim Riley of the Indiana State Police.

"The manner in which information is managed at the beginning of a case impacts it all the way through to the end," he said.

Someone should have shared that wisdom with Mr. Riley sooner.

Because of his premature statements, Tammy's children, other family members, and countless friends have been put through additional grief that they did not need.

It is especially disturbing the way he spoke to the press with partial truths defaming Mr. Fassnacht's character.

Dan did call the police to report a break-in. His pole barn was indeed broken into.

Mr. Riley reported there was no burglary. He then reported Dan changed his story. That also happened after being detained and interrogated for hours.

The public should keep in mind that Dan is a "middle aged farmer." He has not been exposed to a battlefield or emergency medical training. He had no sleep. He was upset and in shock. Not to mention the fact he had just learned the woman he loved was found dead in his yard.

In this country, state and county we are innocent until proven guilty.

Remember a beautiful butterfly once appeared to be a lowly worm.

Love you and miss you, Tammy Sue. Rest in peace. Kathy Peterson             Cutler
