Delphi Ladies never quit

In a perfect world the Delphi Lady Oracles would have taken advantage of senior night and put a mark in the win column before entering sectional play, but they play in the real world where they struggled in a 76-37 loss to the (17-4) Benton Central Bison. While clearly overmatched by BC's more athletic squad, the Oracles never quit hustling and playing hard when many teams would have thrown in the towel.

An Erika Hawn trey and an offensive put back by Amanda Schultz put the Oraclas ahead briefly at 7-4 early in the opening period. The next time the Oracles scored, a free throw by Kristina Barnard, the Bison had run off 19 points in a row. A Barnard three late in the quarter made the score 27-11 at the break.

Hawn hit a pair of free throws and a Brianne Stauffer bucket opened the second, but the Oracles could not keep it up while the Bison were again streaking, this time with 14 unanswered points and a 41-15 lead. The teams traded baskets until the halftime buzzer sounded. The score at the half had BC ahead 49-21.

The third period saw the Bison shut out the Oracles from the field with the only scoring for Delphi being a pair of free throws from both Stauffer and Amanda Schultz, while BC was scoring 14 points of their own. Heading into the final quarter the score stood at 63-25.

The last period saw both coaches use their benches extensively. Joanna Zink hit a pair of baskets early to close out her final home game with a positive note. Zink finished with six points on the night and Delphi's other senior, Stauffer, ended her final home game with four points.

The Oracles played a first round game at the Fountain Central Sectional on Tuesday. Their opponent was Seeger, who entered the sectional with only 5 wins. One of those wins came against the Oracles, in the third game of the season.
