Cougars improve to 5-4 The Lady Cougars put a Christmas bow ending to finals week with a victory over the Comets on Thursday night at Caston. Krystal Brazel (13) and Brooke Yoder (11) played their second strong game back-toback to lead the Lady Cougars with solid 3-point shooting and excellent overall play. The Cougars would have had a large victory with some better free throw shooting. They were cold from the line, hitting 4 of 14, but they still sent the Comets to another galaxy. The Lady Cougars controlled the first quarter to lead 12-6. The second quarter saw a quick run by the Lady Comets to take a 15- 13 lead that expended all the Comets’ energy as they just did not have talent or stamina to stay with the deeper Cougars. The third quarter saw the Cougars open with some key passing, one which resulted in an assist to Brazel, with the Cougars jumping to a 29-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Comets never really got back into the game. A last second 3-point shot by Caston narrowed the game to the final score of 39-34. The Cougars will venture to a new tournament over the holidays with a Dec. 30 event at Mishawaka. They will play Elkhart Central at 12 noon and will await to see their opponent of Mishawaka or Hammond Noll in the second game. This will be a true test of the Cougars and how far they have evolved this year. Coach Katie Seward’s team improved to 7-1 for the season with an easy win over the Lady Comets’ younger version. The Cougars started slowly as no one wanted to score in the first quarter. The last half saw the Cougars get rolling with Molly Craig (7) leading the Cougars. They played without their point guard, Amber Hughes, out with a leg injury. |
