Delphi to build skateboard park at Riley Annex
By Kevin Schnepp

Plans for a new skateboard park to benefit Delphi and surrounding area youth progressed last week.

Delphi Parks Superintendent Richard Farrer unveiled the design during a public forum last Thursday for the new facility to be installed at Riley Annex as early as spring.

Farrer said the city should provide appropriate activities for all age groups.

“The parks should touch as many interests as possible,” commented Farrer. “We have a playground for younger children, the gazebo and boardwalk for adults and now we have the responsibility to take care of this age group’s needs.”

Farrer stated city insurance for the parks department will cover the addition of a skate park.

Delphi City Council President Carolyn Pearson said the city has budgeted some funds to get the project going.

“It just seemed like we were saying ‘no’ to the youth by not having something available to them,” stated Pearson.

According to Farrer, the first phase of the park will cost between $30,000 and $35,000. He said he has applied for some

grants to defray grants to defray costs.

“At this point, we are looking for funding options and community interest,” said Farrer. “The park will go in. It’s just a matter of how it will be paid for.”

Farrer noted the park design is not final. He explained this is where input is needed.

“We don’t really know what a skateboard park is supposed to have, but we know who does,” said Farrer talking about area youth participation.

Current plans for the skate park include ramps, bars, steps and benches. Farrer said the design includes a large flat surface that can be used for other purposes if the skate park is not successful.

“We’ll put in what we can and add to it as we can,” said Farrer. “But if it doesn’t seem to be a worthwhile project to maintain, we’ll be able to utilize the flat surface for something else.”

“More than anything, we want to see the youth take ownership in this. If they want the skateboard park and want it to grow, our hope is that they take part in helping it do so,” Farrer concluded.
