January 6 – Ron Felz, Carroll County’s newly appointed representative to the Twin Lakes Regional Sewer District, said he is willing to represent the county and ready to accept the challenges already present for the residents of Jefferson County… Commissioner Bill Brown was unanimously elected to lead the county commissioners for 2006… The Carroll County Community Foundation has awarded seven grants totaling $8,500 to Carroll County organizations undertaking various projects… Carroll County Council and commissioners approved an animal control ordinance, and shelter services contract for 2006 in joint session Dec. 30… After waiting five years for a chance at an historic iron Stearns truss bridge, Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Inc. has secured such a relic for the Delphi Historic Trails… A recent article in a regional antique publication has generated new business for Teddy’s Emporium in Delphi.
January 11 – January 18 is the first day an individual may file a declaration of candidacy for the 2006 primary election… Local educators are taking up the challenge to set kids on a healthier path by taking the fryers out of the kitchen in the Delphi Community School Corporation… Area IV senior housing planners hope to build a 32-unit development off of CR 200N, across from Whiteman Addition in Delphi… Flora Town Council’s officers will remain the same with Josh Ayres serving as president; Roger Daugherty, vice president; and David Albaugh, financial chairman… Wayne and Mary Downham, married 44 years, are registered trapshooters who travel to shoots all over Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Missouri.

January 18 – An enormous constitution hangs on the cafeteria wall of Hillcrest Elementary; created, written, ratified and signed by Hillcrest Elementary School students… Chrysler Corporation has reportedly closed Doug Abdon Chrysler-Plymouth- Dodge-Jeep dealership in Flora… A request for an exception to the county’s personnel policy, adopted last April, was received from the highway department at the Carroll County Commissioners meeting… Burlington Council members approved a new cell phone and service for marshal Jill Hammond… Carroll girls’ basketball legend Darlene Zinn is among the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s 2006 class of women’s basketball inductees.

January 25 – After months of hearing negative reports about the quantity of meals provided to detainees at the Carroll County Jail, some county council members did an independent investigation, including unannounced visits at mealtimes… Camden Town Council members approved Resolution 2006-A which allows a $25,554 contribution from the remaining 2005 budget to the Rainy Day Fund… Sixty years ago, the Flora Badgers basketball team made history by winning their way to the state finals… DCHS junior Shannon Kremer has made school history by accumulating more records than any other swimmer in the school’s history… Stephan’s IGA of Flora has been awarded the Five Star rating by IGA Inc.
February 1 – The issue of how builders of a proposed condominium complex on the Carroll County side of Lake Freeman will dispose of sewage may spell trouble for them… Retired Delphi attorney Lewis Mullin has been chosen the 26th annual recipient of the Samuel Milroy Award… The Sportsman Inn near Monticello has closed after almost 80 years of operation… Basketball homecoming royalty crowned last weekend were Tony Mackovic and Celsi Ayres, Carroll, and Ryan Replogle and Kayleigh Morgan, Delphi... Eight Oracle and two Cougar wrestlers are advancing to the Logansport Regional… Logan Maxwell is the winner of the Delphi Community Middle School 2006 Spelling Bee.
February 8 – Mayor Lee Hoard announced that a Homeland Security representative who visited recently informed him that reimbursement money was owed to the city… Carroll County Highway Supervisor Ramzi Awwad has decided to abide by the current county personnel policy rather than to request a special exception for the nepotism policy… Carroll County Council will continue to monitor jail meals…Denise Fassnacht has a total Internet business, based in Flora, called Awesome Events… The Town of Burlington held a public hearing last week to present the water feasibility study… The Carroll-White First Steps Local Planning and Coordinating Council will hold its final meeting… Flora Town Council appointed Charlie Meade to the Carroll County Economic Development Corporation at its Feb. 6 meeting.
February 15 – The Biggest Loser, created by Delphi Community High School nurse Amy Adams, is a weight loss program designed to help teachers and staff lose weight and win weekly prizes… Keith Chandler has been named executive director of the newly formed Carroll County Chamber of Commerce… The Carroll County chapter of Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette has been awarded a grant for $41,195 from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, to help build its next house in Delphi… Delphi Historic Trails volunteers are initiating a project that will explore byway routes through the county that can be followed by bikers, motorists, and even long distance Xenia Bridge over Wildcat Creek in Clay Township is closed for structural steel rehabilitation… Sunday was the last day of operation for The Dinner Bell in Burlington, owned and operated by Erin and Kelly Garrison… Carroll Jr.-Sr. High senior Kelsey Kennedy has been named a National Merit Scholar finalist.
February 22 – Dr. Lawrence Stauffer has been presented the Certificate of Distinction Award by the Purdue Ag Alumni Association… Flora’s public access TV station is celebrating 25 years of broadcasting this year… The loss of inventory tax in 2006 was the topic of a meeting between the county council and commissioners… The American Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Days fundraiser is underway…Visitor’s Guide to include attractions in six counties… Carroll County Commissioners grappled with the dilemma of whether to approve bridge expenses for work that will last a lifetime, or to save the county money by directing the highway department to do work without the assistance of a design engineer… Flora Town Marshal Paul Redmon recently promoted James Bishop to sergeant…Scott Gamel is the new pastor at Jubilee Fellowship.
March 1 – After deciding the current zoning ordinances were out of date, Carroll County Area Plan Commission has realized the time has come for the county to update the comprehensive landuse plan… Leadership Carroll County graduated its first class last week with 27 members completing the six-week course… Carroll County will participate in Severe Weather Preparedness Week, March 5-11, according to Justin Darling, county Emergency Management Agency director… The Carroll Cougars defeated the Delphi Oracles, 113- 107, in the second annual Bacon Bowl Battle of the Books… Flora and Cutler Volunteer Fire Departments have both revived their junior firefighters programs.
March 8 – Because the cost of new highway trucks is expected to increase significantly for 2007 models due to tighter emission control standards, the county commissioners approved a plan to finance the purchase of three new trucks… Twin Lakes Regional Sewer District President Jim Smith says that the latest planned development on the Carroll County side of Lake Freeman is “alive and well”… The Town of Flora will begin taking an aggressive approach to vehicle owners who do not move their vehicles for street sweeping… The 1905 Stearns truss bridge, formerly located over Big Monon Ditch in Pulaski County, has been dismantled and moved to Carroll County.
March 15 – The Town of Yeoman has applied for a grant which will fund the community center they have been wanting to build for more than two years… Carroll County Council endorsed a plan by county highway supervisor Ramzi Awwad to purchase six new trucks… The 2006 class of inductees into the Carroll County Ag Hall of Fame is Brad Burton, Dave Lambert and Larry Trapp, the youngest class ever… A Burlington man is free on bond after crashing a vehicle into his house… Delphi Preservation Society received a $1,000 grant from the Carroll County Community Foundation for support of the Opera House feasibility study update… Footloose will premier this weekend…Gordon McCain was recently presented a plaque from the Indiana High School Athletic Association, honoring him for 47 years as a sports official… Steve Nichols of Delphi was awarded The Sagamore of the Wabash at the Carroll County “Ag” Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
March 22 – According to the State Board of Accounts, using money form the Carroll County Jail’s misdemeanant fund to pay for 12 county deputies’ memberships to the YMCA is not an allowable expense… Changes have been made to Indiana’s voting regulations that could mean trouble for unaware residents at primary time… Doug Dieter of Burlington makes Irish bouzoukis, citterns, and other mandolin-type instruments in a shop behind his home… Carroll County Circuit Court Judge Donald Currie took final sentencing in the case of convicted child molester Rick L. Hinton.
March 29 - Carroll County Deputies Tony Burns and John Chapman are opposing each other in the May primary election… Special Deputy Marion Riggle and his K-9 Udy recently spent five days in Bedford for narcotics training and certification… Efforts to stem the tide of expansion of the Twin Lake Regional Sewer District in Carroll County suffered a blow when the Indiana Department of Environmental Management gave permission for construction in both Phase III and Phase IIIB… Dr. Christian Knoeller, an award-winning poet and Associate Professor of English Education at Purdue University, will speak at the Flora-Monroe Public Library on April 6… About 300 people recently enjoyed a night of “Fifties Fun” at Camden Elementary School.
April 5 – Carroll County’s 2006 Lilly Endowment Scholars are Brittaney Mauer and Courtney Roach… As the Twin Lakes Regional Sewer District activities in Phase III and Phase IIIB increase, the amount of oppression from property owners is also growing… Tyler Jenkins, a member of Boy Scout Troop 144, proposed a project to honor Flora volunteer firefighters at the April 3 meeting of the Flora Town Council… Wireless access to the Internet is now available at the Flora-Monroe Public Library…The City of Delphi has purchased two new police cruisers… Rudae’s Salon and Spa is now open in Burlington… Carroll County’s newly formed Chamber of Commerce will host a kick-off reception Thursday evening.
April 12 – Prevent Child Abuse Carroll County is a charter of Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, and the group has already begun holding activities… Assessment is underway to determine if a new county jail building is warranted, or if the current structure, built in 1983, can be made to suffice for several more years… Theresa Brown is Flora Community Club’s first recipient of its Extra Mile Award… Delphi City Police continue to cope with youth who violate the city’s skateboard ordinance… The trail tunnel under the railroad at the end of Canal Park in Delphi has been completed… Delphi Community High School graduate Kira Larimore was recently named fourth runner up in the Miss Purdue Pageant… Carroll School Board has started the ball rolling for the establishment of an education foundation.
April 19 – Gerrit and Janet Arendsen and family want to build a 3,450-cow dairy operation on Jerkwater Road in Democrat Township…Twin Lake Regional Sewer District is re-designing its service area in Carroll County… Flora Kiwanis Club’s first annual home tour will be April 29… Camden town officials voted last week to have Sam Zook, owner of Perfective Web Designs, Inc., Flora, design a web site for the town…Delphi residents could experience an increase in water and wastewater rates soon… The bridge over the Wabash River near the stone quarry, Delphi, will be dedicated to all veterans on April 20.
April 26 – Carroll County Council has decided to stay the course on the local Economic Development Income Tax rate for the time being… This year’s Delphi Art Show celebrates the “Fabulous Fifties.”…Carroll’s football program is back under the leadership of Rick George… Carroll County has an up-andrunning biodiesel plant near Flora, called Heartland Biofuel… The Carroll County Council decides to stay the course on the local Economic Development Income Tax rate… Indiana State Police, Lafayette District, recently honored Trooper Larry Mote of Camden as Trooper of the Quarter… Cutler High School Alumni Association held its annual banquet recently at Carroll Elementary School with 154 in attendance.
May 3 – Tony Burns and Tricia Thompson have won the Republican nomination for county sheriff and prosecuting attorney, respectively… Carroll County Commissioners voted to request, from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, exclusion of Jefferson Township from the district… Rushville Consolidated School Corporation Board of School Trustees announced that they’ve reached an agreement with Dr. John William to become the superintendent of public schools… Carroll County’s 30- year-old zoning regulations are thought by many to be more of a liability than a dependable guide for zoning issues… Snowbirds from Carroll County had a gettogether in Winter Haven, Fla… According to a First Financial Bancorp press release, the company will close 12 offices, including Burlington… Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School won the Hoosier Heartland Conference Math Contest.
May 10 – Characterizing his new position as a “professional opportunity too good to be true, Delphi Community School Corporation Superintendent John Williams submits his resignation… Braden Atwood has won the state freestyle wrestling title… The Sportsman Inn is expected to re-open in mid- June… The summer season officially arrived on Lake Shafer in Monticello when Indiana Beach Amusement and Camp Resort opened for it 81st season… Through a generous monetary donation, Camp Tecumseh YMCA has a new tree house for its younger resident campers and day campers to enjoy.
May 17 – County representatives appointed to oversee the development of a comprehensive land use and zoning plan for Carroll County question if an outside firm should be hired for the work… Delphi Community School Corporation voted to continue a summer drivers’ education program… Delphi Historic Trails now has 10 miles of groomed trails… Carroll County REMC Operation Round-up has awarded $9,500 in grants to five entities for the first quarter of 2006… Delphi Preservation Society was awarded $18,375 to rehabilitate the façade of the old Delphi City Hall Building, which later became the opera house… Flora Lion’s Club has taken over sponsorship of the Hog Jog… David Beale will retire from Delphi Community High School this month, after 38 years of teaching.
May 24 – Gov. Mitch Daniels paid a visit to Carroll County to gather local support for his Major Moves program… Delphi and Carroll named top of class – DCHS: Lydia Smith, valedictorian, and Brittaney Mauer, salutatorian. CJSHS: Rachel Arthur, Kelsey Kennedy, Kelly Moffitt, Nicholas Mylet and Rachael Yost, valedictorians, and Leanna Smith, salutatorian… Financing options for a Carroll County Jail project was the subject discussed by experts for the benefit of county leaders at a special meeting… Delphi C o m m u n i t y S c h o o l Corporation has successfully met Adequate Yearly Progress as mandated by the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001… Hillcrest k i n d e r g a r t e n teacher Ruth Van Matre received the Delphi Lions Club Teacher of the Year Award… Darrel Haldeman has opened Deer Creek Welding… Carroll County libraries announce the start of “Carroll County on the Same Page,” an effort to encourage the entire community to read the same book and to build a better community through reading and the sharing of ideas.
May 31 – Jamie Bradford, after making many mistakes and not graduating with her class, has returned to Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School and graduated with the class of 2006… A tentative offer for the position of interim superintendent of Delphi Community School Corporation has been extended to Fred Minnick… Delphi Girls Softball Team beat Fountain Central 3-0 to win the Class 2A Sectional… Gary Duff, math and physics teacher at Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School, has been named a 2006 Coca-Cola Educator of Distinction… Opponents of a construction permit obtained by Twin Lakes Regional Sewer District for a wastewater treatment plant near the Rattle Snake Creek will have the opportunity to explain their position in a formal setting..Sheila Miller and Aaron Grady are top scholars for the Class of 2006 at Rossville Middle/High School… After 33 years of teaching second grade at Hillcrest Elementary School, Pat Fieleke has retired… Diana Alter retired this year from Carroll Jr.- Sr. High School after 22 years of teaching.
June 7 – The Carroll County Commissioners have ordered a study for a SR 75 connector to the Hoosier Heartland Highway… Steve Egley of Battleground pitched digitizing town ordinances to the Flora Town Council… Camden will be 175 years old in 2007 and a motto and logo for the celebration was revealed… A lot of area children and adults have learned to ride on a horse named Candy Ann and owned by Donna Willis of rural Camden… Deborah Siwinski of Flora has written a children’s book series called “The adventures of Teddy and Freddy”… McKenna Klinkhamer likes her short hair after donating her waist-long hair to Locks of Love.
June 14 – The fate of Delphi’s Arnett Clinic is uncertain… A group of dedicated and thrillseeking Carroll County storm spotters help county… Roger and Alicia Brumbaugh of Delphi have opened the 218 Produce Market, a mile west of Camden… Alan Nacke has restored a 1920s Boyd-Martin speedboat, a worldfamous ‘Bullet Jr.’ model… Robert L. Crume was presented a golden 50-year pin for continuous membership in Camden’s Mt. Zion Lodge #211… Patricia Mason is retiring from Delphi Community High School where she has BEEN teaching chemistry and physics for 16 years… DCHS principal Keith Brakel has submitted his resignation… Brenneco Fire Protection recently relocated from Lafayette to Flora, into a portion of the former Sayco building.
June 21 – IPC is expanding to create 125 new jobs at the local Delphi plant…Flora’s newest eatery is Gracie’s Restaurant & Baker on SR 75N… A West Lafayette company has developed a corn-based alternative aviation fuel, and it chose the Delphi Airport to reveal it to the public… The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority announced the Area IV Development Corporation was awarded two grants to proceed with the proposed senior housing project planned for the outskirts of Delphi… Beta Alpha Chapter was presented two major awards at the 103rd annual national convention of Psi Iota Xi… Burlington Town Council opened the meeting with a decision to tear down the red barn, located on the south side of Burlington Community Park… Visitors to the Delphi Airport Sunday got to see and hear about a new cornbased fuel that is being developed in West Lafayette.
June 28 – By the end of the week, the Town of Flora expects to own the former Brethren Home property at the west edge of Flora… A chemical gas mishap at Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School Monday morning turned into an opportunity for a training exercise for the newly formed district hazardous materials team… Although he admitted he has been thinking about running for Carroll County Prosecutor since the day after the May Primary, local attorney Jim Huffer didn’t file for candidacy with the state until Friday… Delphi Tri- Township fire chief Bill Schock will marshal the annual Independence Day Parade in Delphi… Flora resident Mildred Gasaway turns 100 July 1… Jefferson Township resident Wayne Garrison was appointed to fill the position on the Twin Lakes Regional Sewer District board following the resignation of Ron Felz… Flora Community Club secured a carnival and free entertainment to help make this year’s Carroll County 4-H Fair a true family event… A log cabin that had been moved into the Flora Community Park in 1981, but had fallen into disrepair, has been restored.
