Mary R. Martin
Born July 6, 1923, in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of R. M. and Anna Dane Murphy Smith. She was married Aug. 12, 1945, in Pyrmont, to Carl W. Martin who preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 2003. She was a homemaker and had helped her husband on the family farm. Mrs. Martin was a member of the Burlington Church of Christ, the P.E.O. Chapter BV, Washington Township Extension Homemakers Club, and she was a former volunteer at Logansport Memorial Hospital. At age eight, she moved to Lafayette where she later attended Lafayette Business College and worked as a secretary at Ross Gear Company. She met her future husband in a rural youth group. Rumor has it that Carl wanted her piece of pie, and they eventually fell in love. They were married in 1945, and after Carl returned home from serving in the Army, they moved to Deer Creek to begin their career in farming. Mrs. Martin enjoyed cooking, baking, and spending time with family and friends. Her true love, in addition to her husband, was her faith in Jesus Christ. She was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter, who will miss her deeply. Surviving are two daughters, Dawn Tabler (husband: Norm) and Gaye Shula (husband: Bob), both of Indianapolis; one son, Mike Martin (wife: Sue) of Schaumburg, Ill.; two sisters, Sueann Smith and Lynette Carte, both of Lafayette; six grandchildren, Rachel Tabler, Rob Shula and Lizzy Shula, all of Indianapolis, and Stephanie Martin, Sarah Martin and Chris Martin, all of Schaumburg, Ill.; and one great-grandchild, Masie Tabler of Indianapolis. One daughter, Beth Naomi Martin, and one brother, Harlan Smith, preceded her in death. Services were Dec. 18 at the Burlington Church of Christ with Pastor Tim Pohlman officiating. Burial was in Hopewell Cemetery, Deer Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Foundation and the Kidney Foundation. Gundrum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. |
