Former store manager of Pletch’s Phillips 66 in Flora was arrested and charged with 12 counts of forgery and 12 counts of theft. The arrest followed an investigation by Flora Police and Indiana State Police which revealed that several thousands of dollars had been taken from the convenience store/gas station. According to investigating officers, the manager used several methods of theft including falsifying documentation of store receipts. It was a white Christmas at Canal Park on Sunday. Those who braved the cold to attend “Christmas at the Canal” were offered warm greetings and a cozy fire. 25 YEARS AGO Delphi fall sports awards were presented. Outstanding performances in football merited several 1981 Oracles special awards. They were: Brian Wood, outstanding defensive back; Scott Hughes, most improved lineman; Mike Watkins, most improved back; Ty Sutton, outstanding offensive lineman; Rob Roth, outstanding defensive back; Bill Smothers, best mental attitude; Cecil Dixon, outstanding defensive lineman; and Jack Bieghler, best mental attitude. 50 YEARS AGO Carroll County Grand Jury made a report about the county jail. After inspecting the jail, the jury found that the following improvements were needed – a fluorescent light over the kitchen sink, a front door bell, a wider platform at the entrance of the jail office, that the stone pillars in the basement need pointing up, the wall around the jail needs repair and a high fence should be erected at the rear of the jail. In 1956, Kroger offered turkeys and shank portion hams for 39 cents/pound, fresh country butter was 59 cents/pound and fruit cakes (a bargain at any price) sold for $1.59 for a two-and-threequarter pound slab. California navel and Sunkist seedless oranges were 49 cents/dozen. 75 YEARS AGO The Delphi stores are set for the holiday trade. Radio flashes from the north pole region, being received by Delphi merchants, indicate that Santa Claus is now very busy packing many gifts into his giant airplane, “Spirit of Christmas” in preparation for his great flight around the world the night of December 24. Santa has sent complete supplies of Christmas merchandise to local merchants in advance of his annual trip, in order that local kiddies may pick out toys and gifts that appeal to them before they write to tell what they want. Also Santa has arranged for local dry goods and home furnishing stores to stock completely with the greatest assortment of Christmas goods every displayed for the grown-up folks to select their gifts. 100 YEARS AGO One of the most important real estate deals made in Delphi in recent years was closed up Thursday morning when A.T. Bowen purchased of Mrs. Elizabeth Griffith and Misses Laura and Jesse Griffith the city hotel corner. The land sold is the most desirable quarter of a square in Delphi and is now occupied by old frame buildings which are land marks. The price paid by Mr. Bowen is said to be $8,700. Flora streets were packed with Christmas shoppers Saturday. All the merchants who have been reporting excellent business, reported more business than any other day during the season. The past week has also been an excellent one for business. Saturday and Monday will be the big days. |
