Looking Back 10 YEARS AGO As the 13th recipient of the Pete Award presented by the Flora Rotary Club, Jerry Reinke joins a prestigious group of honorees. For nearly 30 years he has served the community in a myriad of ways all of them helping to make Flora a better place in which to live. His pleasant manner and smile are well known to anyone who has had any dealings with Jerry Reinke. It was extremely pleasant to read of a request for tax abatement that was turned down by the County Council. Facts presented on a new state welfare office planned in Deer Creek Commerce Park east of Delphi showed that only one new employee would be added at the facility. There should be no question whatsoever that such a request for abatement was out-of-line and should have been rejected. 25 YEARS AGO Stephenie Clements, a junior at Carroll High School, and her swim coach, Julie Austin, competed as members of the Purdue Powerlifting team at the YWCA in Lafayette. Clements competing in her first meet lifted 231 pounds in the squat, 100 pounds in the bench press and 251 pounds in the daed lift. Attaining an elite total for her lifts, Austin’s totals were 308 pounds in the squat, 159 pounds in the bench press and 363 pounds in the dead lift. 50 YEARS AGO Free parking in Delphi during the pre-Christmas shopping season was provided in action taken by the city council Monday night. Between Dec. 17 through Dec. 24, the parking meters will be ignored and shoppers may park without paying or without fear of being assessed the usual 25 cents fee for not paying. Camden Woman’s Literary Club won second place in the Indianapolis Star’s 1956-57 club program contest. The winning program was titled, “Indiana – The Crossroads of America.” The Camden club is the oldest literary club in Carroll County, having been organized more than 60 years ago. 75 YEARS AGO So far as practicable, a number of the township trustees in the state are giving unemployed men work on the roads and ditches instead of handling them as public dependents. In some cases where they are sick or aged people, an outright dole is necessary. According to the law, the townships are not responsible for the maintenance of the poor until they have resided in the units for a considerable time. But the law of the heart is greater than the law of the legislature and human beings cannot be allowed to starve or freeze to death. Rev. L.E. Knox, popular pastor of the Christian Church is to receive the first auto license number of the local branch, Dec. 15. His number will be 548,301 so watch for it if you have any hogs missing. 100 YEARS AGO Two Delphi women were arrested at Delphi Monday afternoon upon an affidavit charging them with conducting a house of ill-repute. They were taken before Squire Collins where they plead guilty and were fined and costed $20.50 and $15.50 respectively. They paid and departed. Miss Mazie Ferree, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. C.E. Ferree, of this city, arrived here from Indianapolis Monday where she will continue her practice, that of an optician, having an office with her father. She is the only lady optician in Carroll county. Although a young lady of fine appearance, Miss Ferree is also one of the best informed opticians in the state today. |
