Log schoolhouse added to Canal Park Village A one-room log schoolhouse has been added to the village at Canal Park, Delphi. The 15' x 18' structure was moved from White County earlier this month. It came with wooden benches made from split logs. The Canal Association purchased the building from Bill Parrish when he retired. It had been part of Parrish Pioneer Farm near Idaville. The schoolhouse and other buildings at the park re-create the canal village experience of the mid 1800s. Eventually the school will be open for student tours. The Canal Association is looking for donations of period school-related items such as slates, text books, maps, dinner pails, stove and wood box, and a teacher's desk. Antiques and suitable replicas will be accepted. Canal Board president Dan Mc- Cain said monetary donations, to cover the schoolhouse purchase price of $1,500 and additional moving expenses, also would be appreciated. Those writing checks should designate "schoolhouse" in the memo. Canal village buildings, including the school, will be open during the Old Fashioned Christmas open house Dec. 9 and 10. |
