New ballots on proposed Extended Area Service (EAS) in the '564' area telephone code are being mailed this week. The first subscribers were ruled no good because of errors.

When the first were mailed several weeks ago, we urged our readers to vote "No" because we felt they would not receive adequate compensation for the $7.15 surcharge per month to make calls toll-free to Lafayette. The charge would last for five years-a total of $429.00 That's a lot of toll calls from Delphi to Lafayette if you want to break even.

Razing of the Carroll Telephone Building started Tuesday to make way for construction of a new telephone facility. The original building was constructed in 1845 by Abner H. Bowen and N.W. Bowen, brothers, and grandfather and great-uncle of Hilda Bowen of Delphi. It replaced a frame building destroyed by fire in 1844. The brothers engaged in a general merchandise and produce business which later worked into a banking business. The story goes that it became bank because of being one of the few businesses housing a large safe.

The first election held in Carroll county was held April 28, 1822, at which time 66 votes were cast. The first presidential election was held in the fall of that same year when Jackson received 112 votes to Adams' 73.Since 1875 the county has been fighting grounds for both parties as it is today.
