They have long paid tribute to the veterans buried there. But now the flag pole is rusted and deteriorating, and a replacement pole is needed.
Flora Lions Club recently had the idea for the whole community to come together and raise funds for a new flag pole. They started the drive by contributing $500.
Jerry L. Reinke, who serves on the board of directors for the Maple Lawn Cemetery Association, said he has looked into the project, and $6,000 needs to be raised. He said funds will pay for taking the old pole out, putting in a new base, and purchasing and installing a new pole.
Even though the fundraising has just begun, Reinke said he already has some offers of free labor, and two individuals have made donations.
Reinke said the new pole will be bigger around, made of specially treated aluminum, and will be 50 feet tall. A 6 x 10 ft. flag that has flown over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., is being donated by Congressman Chris Chocola's office.
Reinke said the Clarence Wiles Post of the American Legion, Flora, purchased light- ing for the flag pole several years ago, and has provided replacement flags when needed.
According to the Legion, there are 328 veterans buried at Maple Lawn.
"A new flag pole will show respect for the people who have gone before us," said Susan Shively, president of the Lions Club.
She added that Maple Lawn is a well-maintained cemetery, and a new flag pole is needed to complement its appearance.
The whole community is asked to take part in the effort.
"Whenever organizations and the community pull together, it makes the community stronger," Shively said.
Tax deductible donations may be sent to Reinke at 1495E 50N, Flora. Checks should be made payable to Maple Lawn Cemetery Association, with "flag pole" written in the memo.
Reinke said they'd like to complete fundraising by Feb. 1, 2007.
The project is beginning just before Veterans' Day.
"We hope to have the dedication on or near Memorial Day," Reinke said.
