It seems most Carroll County residents enjoy at least one hobby. Pittsburg resident Clayton Combs has one that's pretty unique - and noticeable.
Combs has been placing American flags on a rock pile in the Wabash River for almost five years.
"I was fishing just upriver from the US421 bridge between Delphi and Pittsburg one day and decided to doll up the rock pile a bit," Combs said.
What began as a personal show of appreciation has garnered attention and assistance from a host of sources. Combs originally purchased all the flags for his idea. Over the past year, the concept has evolved, bringing donations from individuals at first. Most recently, the American Legion donated flags to Combs for his continued efforts.
Legion Commander Rex Wilson made the presentation.
Having observed the positive impact associated with the flags, coupled with the costs, the Legion took the opportunity to say thank you and add their support simultaneously.
"I usually go through four or five flags a year," commented Combs. "The Legion and many others have been very supportive. I'm thankful for the flags, and I've received a great deal of positive comments from all over."
"We appreciate the fact that he takes care of keeping the flag out there," Wilson said. "We felt with him taking the time and furnishing the boat and fuel to do it, we'd take care of the flags.
We're a community service organization," he continued, "and this fit really well, especially with them renaming the bridge the Carroll County Veteran's Memorial Bridge."
Combs said there has been only positive feedback received about the flag over the years.
"It seems most everyone gets something good out of it," he said. "Everyone has nice things to say, and no one's complained. I think it's noticed by a lot of people. It's nice to get that kind of support," he added.
Combs and wife Marcella are Delphi natives. Although they lived in Florida for several years, they said they consider Carroll County their true home. Combs said they couldn't have found a better place to live and raise their children and are happy to live here again.
While the couple wintered in Florida, friends would call when the flag was down. "People always ask where it is when it's not there."
Combs' brother, Charles Jr., recently passed away. A memorial service, with 21-gun salute, was given in his honor in the vicinity of the river. He placed a smaller flag on the rock pile in memory of his brother.
Combs said he has several reasons for displaying the flag on the river. He wants to honor those who served or are serving in the military, fallen heroes, and the police force. Additionally, those who have died on the historic waterway and countless more who take time to enjoy it have a special place in his heart.
Combs gave a simple explanation for his efforts.
"It's for everybody who loves the flag."
