Thompson wins; Republicans continue domination

Carroll County will have a new prosecuting attorney for the first time in many years. Republican Tricia L. Thompson defeated Democratic candidate James R. Huffer in Tuesday's General Election. She garnered 3,842 votes (60.43%), compared to his 2,516 (39.57%).

"It feels great," Thompson said about the win. "I said we needed a change in Carroll County and the voters agreed. But this is only the first hurdle," she said. "I will be taking stock and deciding what needs to happen and what my priorities are from now until the time I take office."

Republican incumbent Jane Brewington narrowly edged her Democratic opponent Pamela J. Mansfield. The vote tally was 3,196 (50.65%) to 3,114 (49.35%).

For County Council District 1, Ronald "Ron" W. Slavens (R), defeated Richard N. DePoy (D). The vote tally was 873 (58.71%) to 614 (41.29%).

Republicans elected to four-year terms with no opposition were: Don Currie, Judge of Carroll Circuit Court, with 4,856 votes; Beth L. Myers, County Auditor, 4,969 votes; Tony Burns, County Sheriff, 5,329 votes; Doris L. McLeland, County Assessor, 5,026 votes; Loren T. Hylton, County Commissioner District 1, 4,670 votes; Jerry L. Hendress, County Council District 2, 1,437 votes; Ann Brown, County Council District 3, 1,155 votes; and Nancy S. Cripe, County Council District 4, 1,177 votes.

Brewington
County voters chose Richard G. Lugar (R) for U.S. Senator with votes 4,860 (86.15%) over Steve Osborn (L), 768 (13.61%).

They also chose Todd Rokita (R) for Secretary of State, 3,476 (55.62%), over Joe Pearson (D), 2,577 (41.24%), Mike Cole (L), 188 (.13%) .

For Auditor of State, county voters chose Tim Berry (R), 3,476 (55.87%), over Judy Anderson (D), 2,746 (44.13%). Their choice for Treasurer of State was Richard E. Mourdock (R), 3,537 (57.04%) over Michael W. Griffin (D), 2,664 (42.96%).

In the race for U.S. Representative District 2, county votes chose Chris Chocola (R), 3,759 (58.88%), over Joe Donnelly (D), 2,617 (40.99%).

Richard W. "Rich" McClain (R) was unopposed for State Representative District 24. He received 4,856 of the votes cast.

Of the county's 13,818 registered voters, 6,551 cast ballots Tuesday. Voter turnout was 47.41%. Straight party ballots cast were: Republican 1,170; Democratic 840; and Libertarian 53.

Slaven
Neda K. Duff is the new Deer Creek Township Trustee.

"It feels good," Duff said after winning the election. Opponent, Helen Schilling, is the long time trustee while Duff served on the township advisory board. Duff said she would like for there to be a transition period to help her learn the job when Schilling leaves the post.
