The third annual high school Battle of the Books was kicked off at Carroll and Delphi this week with the announcement of the titles of the ten books to be read for the competition.
Brooke Lytle submitted the winning logo for Carroll with a design that incorporates the titles of the ten books into a Cougar paw. Students will all receive a T-shirt in team colors imprinted with the design.
Lytle was presented with a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble at the kick-off meeting.
One hundred twenty-eight Carroll students (36% of the student body) are participating on one of 15 student teams. Twelve parents have also formed a team and will compete in the local contest on Feb. 13.
Delphi Community High School has 19 teams of 5 members each.
The winners of each school's competition will compete in the third annual Bacon Bowl Battle of the Books on Feb. 21 at DCHS.
Carroll's competition has been funded through grants from the Carroll Consolidated Schools Gifted and Talented Funds, Carroll County REMC, Carroll County Advocates for Literacy, and Flora Psi Iota Xi. These groups have provided copies of the ten books for each team and the T-shirts for team members. Flora-Monroe Library has also participated in the program and has copies of the books available to be checked out.
Delphi has funded the books through the school's Gifted and Talented grant. Sponsors for prizes and T-shirts are Friends of Delphi Public Library, the Delphi chapter of Psi Iota Xi, and Delphi Rotary Club.
