Are you an informed voter?

Once more, Tuesday will mark your opportunity to vote, that is, if you are an active citizen of this great country. One of the things that makes it great is the freedom we have to vote.

On that score, let us say that you still have the time to become better informed - in particular by reading the Comet for Carroll County news and by reading other nearby newspapers and watching television to find out more about the state and national issues.

Former U.S. Representative Lee Hamilton wrote, "Following the news allows you to do more than simply keep an eye on Congress, it also helps you to form the judgments you'll need when you go into the voting booth. Voting is good, but informed voting is better."

The following words of wisdom were found in The Hoosier Democrat, a Flora newspaper, 100 years ago.

"What is the best for Carroll County and who can best manage its business interests are what the voter should consider. A county, after all, is just a business co-partnership run in the interest and for the benefit of the stockholders, who are the taxpayers. Every taxpayer is a partner in the concern and his interest as a taxpayer demands that the best talent, the best energy and the best judgment be engaged in its management."

Just when you think that things are vastly different than they were 100 years ago, you find that's not always so.

When you walk into the poll Tuesday, know as much as you can about the people seeking office and cast a knowledgeable ballot.
