Voters go to the polls on Tuesday

The Fall General Election will be Tuesday, Nov. 7. Polls will open for voting from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

State law requires that all voters must show a government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot. The ID must:

+display the voter's photo;

+display the voter's name, and the name must conform with the voter registration record (conform does not mean identical);

+contain an expiration date and either be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last General Election (Nov. 2, 2004);

+be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. Government (driver's license, photo ID card, passport, or military ID).

Those who do not have a valid photo ID can obtain one free of charge from any Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch.

In this county, there are contested races for county prosecutor, county treasurer, and county council district 1, as well as seven for township trustee.

The county attorney's main responsibility is to represent the State of Indiana and prosecute violators of state statutes in various courts with criminal jurisdiction.

Duties of the county treasurer include collecting, retaining custody of and disbursing county funds, collecting delinquent taxes, and collecting local and state general property taxes and inheritance taxes.

A county councilman helps fix the tax rate for county purposes, imposes the tax levy, adopts the annual budget, fixes salaries of officers, deputies, assistants and employees whose salaries are paid from any county fund, and levies taxes to provide funds to erect new jails and repair old ones.
