The Carroll Cougars are moving on to round two of Sectional 36, thanks to quarterback Riley Eller's four TD passes. The Cougars defeated the Wes-Del Warriors from Gaston in Delaware County 39-27 at home Friday night.
Carroll will face the (4-6) Frankton Eagles who defeated the (7-3) Clinton Central Bulldogs.
Coming into Friday night's game, both teams had nearly identical season records with the Wes-Del team winning one more game than the Carroll team, 3-6.
Eller was on fire again this week, throwing four TD passes. Two of those passes were for 81 yards and 29 yards to Nick Flora. Eller also threw TD passes to Ty Sullivan, a 13-yarder, and a 38-yard pass to Brandon Walters. Eller was 13 of 23 for 302 yards and rushed for 76 yards. Flora caught four passes for 151 yards
Sectional time is when the records can be thrown out and teams have a chance to start over. Wes-Del, a fine football team, almost shocked the Cougar faithful late in the fourth quarter when they put 21- points on the board. But the Cougars had a nice cushion and scored a TD themselves in that quarter to hold onto for the win.

The Warriors were all over the Cougars, both offensively and defensively. Wes-Del opened up the scoring on the first play from scrimmage when Johnson threw a 59-yard TD pass to a wide open Justin Vance. The kick failed.
The Cougars came right back as Eller threw an 81-yard TD pass to Flora, who scampered down the sidelines for the score. The kick was no good and the game was tied at 6-6 at 7:25 (1).
In the second quarter the Cougars controlled the game and put 19 points on the
board. With 11:50 on the clock Eller scored on a 24-yard touchdown run and Bagwell's PAT attempt was good. (13-6 C). With the Warriors deep in their own territory, they fumbled the ball at the 13- yard line. A.J. Butcher recovered for the Cougars. Eller then found Sullivan for a 13-yard TD pass. The two-point conversion pass was no good (19-6 C). The Cougars closed out first half scoring when Eller again found Flora for a 29- yard strike. The extra point failed, but Carroll was up 25-6.
The Cougars put more points on the scoreboard in the third quarter, when Eller threw a 38-yard TD pass to Walters. Bagwell's kick was good, making the score 32-6 C.
The Warriors put a scare in the Cougar crowd in the fourth quarter when they put several points on the board. Wes-Del made it easy for themselves. They would do an offside kick and get the ball back
and score. A 46-yard TD pass from Johnson to Vance had Wes-Del trailing 32-12C 7:50 (3).
Carroll's defense put points on the board at 10:42 (4) when Josh Holda intercepted a Johnson pass and returned it 12 yards for the score. Bagwell kicked the extra points for 39-12C.
The Warriors added two more scores when Jeremy McCullough caught a 26- yard TD pass. The two-point conversion was good, 39-20 at 5:17 (4). After an offside kick, Johnson threw a 24-yard TD pass to Vance. The PAT kick was good, 39-27.
It seemed like the clock would never run out to end the game. The Warriors had the momentum in the fourth quarter and they were pushing to go home with a big victory. However, the Cougar defense held tough.
The clock finally went to zero and the Cougars are now on to round 2. Frankton
came into sectional 36 playing the Bulldogs of Clinton Central at Michigantown. The Eagles (3-6) defeated Coach George Gilbert's Bulldogs 34- 26 to advance. Otis Cress, who is in his 22nd year at Frankton, has compiled a 157-78 overall record. The last sectional the Eagles won was in 2001. Their wins this year were over Eastbrook, Mississinewa, and Alexandria. The Eagles lost to Northwestern, Lapel, Blackford, Elwood, Oakhill and Madison-Grant. They are in the Central Indiana Conference and were 3-4 in conference play this year.
The game Friday night will be on the Frankton field.
With the victory over the Warriors, the Cougars have won two in a row. Assistant Coach Andy Zinn said after the game, "This was a big victory. We're playing good right now."
