Missed opportunity

We commend the American Legion in Delphi for hosting a candidate forum Monday night at the DCHS Little Theatre.

The forum afforded the public the opportunity to see the candidates in person, listen to their views on various topics, and witness how they interact with their opponent.

The three contested county faces were featured - prosecutor, treasurer and county council.

The individuals elected to these positions will serve four years. One will be helping to fix the county's tax rate, levy taxes, and decide whether to build a new jail or renovate the existing one.

Another will be disbursing county funds and collecting delinquent taxes.

The third will be prosecuting violators of state statutes, recommending sentences, and spending diversion fund monies.

These are important responsibilities. You would think the Little Theatre would have been full. It wasn't. And that's a shame.

Two-thirds of the people in attendance were affiliated with one or the other political party and they probably already know how they are going to vote. That left a handful of people who wanted to know more about the people who will be running this county before they cast their vote.

There weren't even high school students there. This would have been a great opportunity for them to witness our political process in action.

But thank you, American Legion Post 75, for a well put together event. You did your part and more to help the process.

Voter apathy is unbecoming to the Carroll County community.
