Fall Sports Summaries The Delphi 8th grade football team scored the winning touchdown with 1:29 remaining in the game to break a 14-14 tie at Benton Central Thursday night en route to a 20-14 victory. The Oracle 7th graders dropped a close one in the opener, 8-0. Delphi's Dustin Salyer found an open Bradley Roth in the end zone with a 10-yard scoring strike for the only score of the second half by either team, sending the Oracle 8th graders home victorious. Michael Rogers led Delphi (4-1) in both rushing - 5 carries for 77 yards, including a 51-yard TD for the game's first score in the 1st quarter - and receiving with 2 catches for 18 yards. The Oracles' Derek Bradshaw had another solid game running the ball with 9 carries for 46 yards, while Dayton Rumell scored Delphi's only other TD on a 20-yard run in the first half. Shane Hyman had the only other Oracle reception, good for 6 yards as Salyer completed 4-of-7 passes for 34 yards and the game-winning TD. Delphi's only two-point conversion came when Salyer found Roth in the end zone after the game's first score. Benton Central (0-5) scored touchdowns in both the first and second quarters - the latter of which came with just 0:48 seconds remaining in the half to knot the score at 14 apiece at intermission. Delphi finished with 180 yards of total offense on 31 plays, while BC also finished with 31 plays, good for 151 yards in another evenly-played match up. The Oracle 7th graders (1-4) dropped their fourth game in-a row - with all losses now by a total of just 16 points - as the Bison held Delphi scoreless for the first time this season. Defensively, Corby Hawn recovered two fumbles for the Oracles to help keep the game close, but Benton Central's defense was even more stubborn, stopping Delphi's final drive inside the Bison 10-yard-line as time expired. Both Delphi teams return to the field Thursday night in Monticello to face Twin Lakes' Roosevelt Middle School, with the 7th graders scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m. Carroll soccer team ends regular season Carroll's soccer team was able to play under the lights for a second time this season. The game was played last Wednesday after the Homecoming powder puff event and pep session. This was the first time for Carroll to play the visiting Western Panthers. The Cougars were up at the half 2-1 on goals by Arthur Santos, assisted by Kacey Kult, and Antonio Delgado, assisted by Santos. Western's goal was on a penalty kick. In the second half Western put two more goals in, while the Cougars never scored again. Final score was 3-2, Western. Adam Tussinger had 6 saves at the goal. The Carroll team traveled to Western Boone on Saturday to play their last regular season game. At the half the score remained 0-0 with Tussinger having 12 saves. The WB Stars returned from the half and scored 2 minutes into play and then again with 2 minutes remaining to win the game 2-0. Tussinger had 3 saves in the final half. Carroll plays Logansport in the second game of sectional play at Logansport on Thursday night. Michael Myers was incorrectly identified as Arthur Santos in a photo from the Carroll-Delphi soccer game that appeared in last week's issue. Season winds down for DCMS runners Delphi Middle School co-ed cross-country team traveled to Royal Center and competed against Pioneer, Caston, Rochester, and North White on Sept. 25. The girls team finished fourth and the boys team finished second behind Rochester. Top finishers for the girls team were: Grace Currie 7th, Emily Layman 14th, Annie Mose 15th, Chelsey Marcott 18th, and Allee Flora 19th. Top finishers for the boys were: Kevin Kauffman 2nd, Eric Carpenter 5th, Cody Murray 11th, Ricky Windell 12th and Cole Murray 21st. Last Thursday, the team hosted a meet against Lincoln and Roosevelt middle schools. Despite the rainy conditions, many of Delphi's runners set personal bests. Top finishers for the girls were Currie, Layman, Marcott, Mose, Flora and Kayla Watley. Top finishers for the boys were Kauffman, with a new school record for 3000 meters, Windell, Carpenter, Murray, Adam Marvell and Quinton Allen. The team traveled to Lafayette Jefferson High School on Tuesday for the final meet of the season, the WCJC conference meet. Oracle JV holds off Bison Delphi's Junior Varsity team came away from Benton Central Monday night with a 14-8 victory. The Oracles scored first in the second quarter on a 7-yard run off tackle by Braden Atwood. The kick failed. The Oracle defense swarmed as a team and only had one major breakdown in the second quarter, allowing the Bison to take an 8-6 lead. In the third quarter, the Oracles drove the ball into Bison territory until they fumbled for the fifth time that night. Two plays later Corby Anderson picked off a pass and the Oracles took it down and scored on a 13-yard scamper by AJ Beckett. Beckett completed the pass to Justin Snyder for the two point conversion. The Oracles were up 14-8 late in the fourth when they fumbled again. On the next play, Beckett picked off a Bison pass and the Oracles ran the clock out. County foe Carroll is the next opponent for the 2-4 Oracles. Kick-off will be at 6 p.m. at CHS field. |
