Recycling Cooperative wins Local Government Cooperation Award

Carroll Communities Recycling Cooperative (CCRC) received the 2006 Local Government Cooperation Award from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) on Monday at the IACT Annual Conference and Exhibition in Indianapolis.

The Local Government Cooperation Award is given to city, town or county cooperative effort for importance, innovation and extraordinary cooperation between municipalities or other government entities.

The CCRC, created by the city of Delphi and the towns of Burlington and Flora, offers weekly curbside recycling service to residents and businesses in the three communities. The program saves landfill space, energy and taxpayer money. They also accept materials from other county residents at different locations. Recycling awareness has grown significantly as participation by households and local businesses has increased.

IACT Executive Director Matthew C. Greller commented on the cooperative, saying, "This program has saved taxpayers money and raised awareness to the benefits of and need for recycling. While some communities have struggled in providing recycling services, the CCRC has streamlined its service and increased the amount of users."

In its 30th year, the IACT Annual Awards program recognizes communities and individuals in municipal government for excellence and outstanding achievement. A twelve-member panel of qualified judges selected this year's winners from a competitive field of nominees from around the state.
