Lessons from the Heart
Tested through trials
By Dr. Peter Roussakis

Roussakis
For the Christian, suffering may come sometimes as the consequence of our own actions or the state of our hearts. At other times, it may be that God allows trials to come for our good, for the refinement of our character, or simply to cause us to remember Him more than we have.

In the eighth chapter of Deuteronomy, the Lord through Moses instructed the Israelites to be faithful in remembering to give God the honor He is due. In the course of the admonitions, some of the possible reasons were given why God allows trials to come upon his people. God may use them intentionally to humble us (v. 2), so that we will acknowledge and keep the eyes of our hearts upon Him with thanksgiving for

His provisions and care. God may use trials to test our loyalty to Him (v. 2). Are we truly committed to Him? Have we allowed some of the world's ways, things, other activities or even work to sway us from keeping God as number one in our lives, or even to cause us to get lazy about worshipping Him regularly with the family of faith?

Further, He may allow suffering to teach us (v. 3) particular spiritual lessons. And, as our Heavenly Parent, God may have seen the need to discipline us (v. 5) for our own good, and ultimately for His glory. Moreover, why is this so? Because following the trials and tests God has much good in store for those who faithfully persevere (v. 7).

Therefore, we should regularly and faithfully praise the Lord (v. 10) for his love, even if it may be tough love. It will be helpful for us to remember (v. 18) and review all of His goodness to us, that we may be faithful in doing His will in the present.
