Delphi Forestry Commission seeks public opinion Last March the City of Delphi began development of a Forestry Commission to oversee care, maintenance and planting of trees on city-owned property under the jurisdiction of the city. The sevenmember commission which includes five voting members and two ex-officio representatives of the city, began the task of enforcing the city's tree ordinance, updating a tree care manual, and applying for status as a National Tree City enabling the commission to apply for and acquire tree planting grants. With those steps well under way, the commission will hold a public meeting at 10 a.m. Sept. 7 to gather input and ideas regarding city tree needs. Trees play an important role environmentally, aesthetically, and for economic development. Environmentally, they offer wind breaks in winter, shade to cool and cut energy costs in the summer months, help clean the air of pollutants, aid in retention of moisture in the ground, encourage birds and other wildlife, and are a source of oxygen through photosynthesis. For economic development and aesthetics, trees add beauty. Interested Delphi residents are invited to meet Forestry Commission members and offer comments during the public meeting. The meeting will be held in the City Council room of the Delphi City Building at the corner of Main Street and Union Street. |
