Charles A. Shaffer Charles A. Shaffer, 69, of Sugar Grove, Ill., died on Aug. 11, 2006, at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Ill. Born in Carroll County on Nov. 29, 1936, he was the son of Paul E. and Gladys Binney Shaffer. He married Ruth Kelly in March of 1963. They spent many happy years together until she died on March 5, 1999. He married Lucille L. Upton Cerny in March of 2002. They spent the following four happy years together. She survives. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, stepfather, stepgrandfather, brother and uncle, who will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He had recently become a member of the First Baptist Church of Big Rock in Big Rock, Ill. He served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, having been stationed in Hawaii and Lebanon. In his younger days, he was the owner and operator of his own trucking business in Indiana. He had more recently been employed as an over-the-road truck driver for A.B.F. until his retirement. He and his wife Lucy had, for some time, volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. Also surviving are a daughter, Kelly Lurtz (husband: Mark) of Cottleville, Mo.; a brother, William Shaffer (wife: Judy) of Burnettsville; four sisters, Ruth Ann Mehall of Grand Haven, Mich., Mary (Glenn) ClawsonBrown of Delphi, Jane Shaffer of Logansport and Carol Barr (husband: Paul) of Kokomo; and two grandsons, Aidan and Cuinn Lurtz. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife Ruth Shaffer. Services were Aug. 14 at Fisher-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home in Monticello, with burial at Seceeder Cemetery in Burnettsville.
