A fund drive is underway to benefit the newly formed Carroll County Youth Soccer League. The recreational soccer league is for boys and girls ages 5 to 14. All games will be played at the Flora Community Park.
Burlington Varsity girls' softball team recently completed the season by winning the TriCounty League tournament held at Delphi. Burlington finished second in the league to Royal Center and completed the season with a 10-3 mark.
Both the Comets and Rockets Special Olympics softball teams won the Sectionals. They will compete in the state championships at the Twin Lakes Softball Complex in Bloomington.

Officials of the Flora Community Club, meeting last week, discussed 4th of July Fireworks at great length.
They indicated that nothing was resolved although they did question the amount of money spent -$2,800. Now they want to know if the people of the community think that such a sum of money is worth it for the 20 minutes of entertainment which it brought.
Carroll County Conservation Officier Ed Houston said about 3,000 fish are dead on Lake Freeman and about 90 percent of the dead fish are catfish. At first the fill was thought to be caused by some sort of fungus or virus. Now a one-time influx of a toxic waste or other pollutant flushed into Lake Shafer is being considered as the cause. Officials will continue their investigation in hopes that the source will be pinpointed and future kills can be prevented.

Indiana Congressman Charles Halleck, reported that there are 255 widows of Civil War veterans in Indiana with 4,931 throughout the United States. Carroll county native, Mrs. Lucy J. Van Deman, of 201 South Illinois Ave., Monticello has the distinction of being White county's only Civil War widow She celebrated her 93 birthday January 5.
White County Veterans Service Officer Merle Johns said it is well established that Mrs. Van Deman is the only Civil War widow in that county. She was married to James W. Van Deman who would now be 112 years old. He died in 1911.

Delphi National Guardsmen returned to their homes here, Sunday, after two weeks of enjoyable camp life spent at Camp Knox, Kentucky. Everybody returned to this city in fine shape.
During the maneuvers, Tuesday to Thursday of last week, Captain Mahanna of Company G was a member of the Brigade staff, a very enviable position and one that shows the way in which Captain Mahanna stands in high circles of the National Guard. During his
absence, Lieutenant Roy Gardner was in charge of the company and Lieutenant Loyal Hoshaw was battalion mess officer.
According to Maj. Gen. Robert H. Tyndall, the two weeks' field training was the most instructive ever received by a guard organization. The guardsmen had a taste of what actual warfare might mean.

The Wheeling Double Male Quartet will give a concert at Northcutt & Company's ice cream parlors, Flora, on Saturday night July 28 from 8 to 10 o'clock. Ice cream and cake and soft drinks, will be served. Everybody come and have a good time. This will be the best entertainment of the season.
The Ladies Aid Society of the Christian Church will serve a chicken dinner under the big tent Wednesday. Fifteen cents to everybody. All are invited.
