Kids became 'royalty' for a week

Youth from Carroll and surrounding counties were chosen recently to attend the Royal Family Kid's Camp at Camp Tecumseh YMCA. Each of the children selected became a prince or princess for a week.

The kids weren't chosen because of looks, financial status, age or education but because each was a foster child who deserved to be treated as royalty, said Julie Price of Camp Tecumseh.

All of the children had endured their share of hardships; the camp was a way to reward them for their strengths, talents and abilities that have allowed them to live a life that has had its challenges.

The program consisted of volunteer chaperones dedicated to making the lives of foster children seem less abrasive. The week at camp included a big birthday celebration. The kids were presented with a giant cake and each received birthday gifts. Most of the children had never experienced having a birthday cake or presents until their encounter with Royal Family Kid's Camp.

Kids went swimming and fishing, made arts and crafts, did skits, experienced the Black Hole and attended chapel.

One of their highlights was dressing up for a special dance. The girls were in dresses, shoes, makeup and fancy hairstyles, while the boys chose an army theme. They painted their faces and dressed in camouflage.

The camp continues to be successful due to private donations and the funds raised from the annual Royal Banquet, which brings in about $14,000. Sponsors would like to expand the camp, but funding and chaperones are limited.
