During the board meeting, principal Bill Shidler was hosting the kindergarten orientation at Hillcrest Elementary School. In his written report, he said he was expecting 100 students and their parents to attend.

HES Meet the Teacher Night will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. in the back parking lot. There will be plenty of food. Kids, parents and friends of HES are invited.

The board voted to let bids for a new running track. One firm has estimated that the work will cost $440,000 for an eight-lane track and $348,500 for a six-lane track with an eight-lane straightaway. Work could begin near the end of football season and finish in the spring.

Everett Snoeberger of Camden commented that he and his family attended freshman orientation. He said the mentor program was very commendable.

Stone later explained that the program matches freshmen with upperclassmen mentors and aims to help freshmen understand what seniors expect of them, to help more students achieve graduation, to help freshmen understand that they are wanted at the school and to give them a resource they can use all year long.

Snoeberger also requested from the board a progress report on the renovations that are being accomplished at each of the buildings and a plan of what will be accomplished in the near future.

The next school board meeting will be Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. at the administration building.
