Carroll FCCLA project earns silver at Nationals
Their project was on p r e v e n t i n g bullying. More than 5,000 Family, Career and Community Leaders of Leaders of America members, advisers, alumni, and guests from across the country gathered in Nashville, Tenn., in July for the meeting. Also attending from Carroll were Holly Lawrence, Nicole Brafford, Cally Ayres, Jason Hazel, Jacob Craig, Devin Smith, Savanah Stevens, and adults Diana Alter, Suzi Mathews, and Donna and Tony Snapp. Savanah Stevens, as state vice president of communication, was active in national workshops and duties as a state officer. She will work with other FCCLA members and advisers in Indiana to encourage others to discover their strengths, target career goals, and initiate a plan to ignite youth leadership in their community. The national meeting centered on the student-developed theme, "Amplify Your Life!" During the five-day meeting, participants examined many of the issues facing youth, and worked toward gaining the life skills they need to meet those challenges.
and youth sessions. Other meeting highlights included: + STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition). These build proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills. Indiana was represented with 26 gold and 16 silver medals. + Spotlight on Projects where representatives from various states shared successful national, state, or chapter projects. + A Relay for Life Rally where attendees honored cancer survivors and remembered those lost to cancer. $249,000 was raised by chapters in the U.S. Carroll members were active in the walk, lighting luminaria and carrying the Indiana banner. Officers attend Academy Another summer FCCLA event was the July 31-Aug. 1 Leadership Academy in Indianapolis, attended by District V officers from Carroll. Officers attending were Robin Guise, district president; Britanny Reef, Kierstyn Harper, Adam Bonner, and Devin Smith. State officer Savanah Stevens and Diana Alter also attended. The state officers conducted workshops and organized the training for the two-day event. Workshops included such topics as community service, membership development, public relations, and STOP the Violence projects. Topics of the two keynote speakers were how to develop better leadership skills and the importance of developing wise spending and savings practices at an early age. |
