Meetings Members of Wednesday Forum met at the home of Margaret Burkle for their August meeting. The program on "America's 400th Anniversary" was given by Norma Sullivan. In May, 18 months of events began, called America's 400th Anniversary, and visitors from around the world are invited to see where the nation began. Near the city of Jamestown, Virginia is Historic Jamestown, site of the original first permanent English colony in the New World. Jamestown is a part of what is called Virginia's Historic Triangle, which also includes Williamsburg and Yorktown. The 23-mile Colonial Parkway links them in convenient and scenic succession. An Archaearium will feature an exhibit hall and a live archaeology site at the 1607 James Fort. Visitors can view remnants of the settlement including the 1640 Old Church and remains of the 1608 glass factory. Adjacent to Historic Jamestown, the Jamestown Settlement chronicles the colony's first 100 years. Interpreters depict 17th-century life in re-creations of a colonial fort, a Powhattan Indian Village and the three ships that arrived in 1607: the Discovery, the Godspeed, and the Susan Constant. Northeast of Jamestown, Colonial Williamsburg's 301 acres transplant travelers into the past. Yorktown is the site of the last major battle of the American Revolution. All of these sites have special activities and exhibits. In October of 1957 Jamestown celebrated its 350th anniversary and was visited by the queen of England. Sullivan and her husband Max, who was stationed at nearby Ft. Eustis, Va., participated in this celebration and saw the queen. Delphi CWF The CWF of the Delphi Christian Church met in the home of Edithe Berninger. Ten people answered the roll call, "What is your favorite flower?" Winnie Beard gave the worship using the theme, "Putting God First." Activities for the year were discussed, but no decisions were made. Some new things have been purchased for the kitchen. Edithe Berninger gave the lesson, "You Are a Special Person." Your hope is in God's power. Rejoice in the Lord always. The next meeting will be Sept. 5. Lee Nydegger will be hostess. |
