Web poll What should the county do with the Burlington ambulance service? Do nothing and let Burlington solve the problem on its own. Find or build a building between Flora and Burlington and move the Flora site to a more central location to provide service to a larger area with the same staff. Assume financial responsibility for the Burlington service, rent the same building and staff it as needed. Web poll results Each week the Comet polls its readers on a different topic. LastWeek's Results: Do you support raising taxes to generate additional revenue to address jail problems? Has anybody looked into just putting a second story on the jail? There are older jails around that can still accommodate inmates. Why do we have to have a brand new one? Then what would we do with the old building....turn it into a parking lot? The present jail is probably less than 30 years old. Wouldn't renovations cost a lot less? * * * I would support heavier criminal fines with those funds earmarked for construction as well as raising the amount paid by other counties for housing prisoners. Revenue generated from meals and vending should also be reinvested in the construction fund rather than be part of the sheriff's salary. * * * How about those responsible for the neglect and mismanagement of the jail and its "upkeep" being held accountable. Put a user fee on the thing (jail)! The county needs to think of more creative ways to generate funds besides always relying on the property owners. * * * Number one leave the property taxes alone. They are high enough. Gas prices and the cost of living continue to rise. The only thing staying the same are our wages. If you must gouge us, do it slowly so we don't really notice it. Yes, we need a new jail. I think it should be located in Camden, which is almost the center of Carroll County. I say add a penny per dollar to sales tax in the county. Also add half a cent to the gas tax and a quarter of a cent to county income tax. But if you raise our property taxes any more, no one will want to move to this county. Ask for donations from the county's big businesses such as Indiana Packers, Underhill Industries Peters-Revington, and The Andersons. And to the officials who do not think we need the new jail, I bid you go stay a weekend in the jail and end up being one of the people who are forced to sleep on the floor where there is only one toilet and shower for four or more people. Each cellblock has only one shower no matter if the cell block is for two or ten people. Think about that when you step in that shower barefoot! For anyone who thinks the jail only needs remodeled, go ahead and stay there for a few nights with stale air and a heating and air conditioning system that freezes you in the summer and roasts you in the winter and visitation rooms that reek of body odor. Yes, we need a new jail, but leave our property taxes alone. |
