Looking Back 10 YEARS AGO Burlington Faith Church of Christ sent 27 members to Grenada, West Indies to conduct Vacation Bible School. The group of nine adults and 18 junior and senior high students worked with 125 Grenadian children ages 2-18. Many friendships were established. The Stitching Line in Flora will have its grand opening celebration Saturday. WFRN 93.7 will broadcast live from there. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be drawn hourly. Cindy and Jerry Reinke recently relocated the embroidered clothing business from their residence to 11 S. Center Street. 25 YEARS AGO Two Flora couples can attest to the truth of the old clich, "it's a small world." While vacationing, Robert and Carol Baker, Jody and Andrea, were traveling from Mt. Rushmore to Yellowstone National Park. Along the way they stopped to gas up in Greybull, Wyoming. Carol was gazing out her window when she noticed an Airstream camper with an Indiana sticker. Upon closer observation, the camper had an 8A license plate. Bob and Bonnie Stephan, on their way from Yellowstone to Mt. Rushmore, had happened upon the same gas station as the Bakers. They visited a while before going their separate ways but not before the Stephans asked where the Bakers' other daughter, Kelly was. Kelly was working back home...at Stephan's IGA. 50 YEARS AGO The value of products sold in 1954 by operators of 1,645 farms in Carroll county was $15,885,038. The value of forest products sold from the county's farms was $14,857. 75 YEARS AGO Old Settlers Day this year promises to be again as big as ever. Several wonderful acts have been procured by the local merchants to attract the crowd and many people from all over Carroll and ajoining counties are planning to attend. Handy and Handy will be one of the acts. They will give a musical comedy act featuring guitar, banjo, French harp music, and tumbling. The St. Julian Troupe, famous circus stars, have been engaged to appear Saturday. An old-fashioned balloon ascension will be made by MileHigh Ruth who will make a triple parachute leap when he cuts loose from the balloon. Ruth is one ofAmerica's best known and most daring balloonists. 100 YEARS AGO A reunion of the Todd family will be held at the home of John K. Todd, 1 1/2 miles southwest of Delphi, Wednesday. Several generations of the family have resided in the county and the first settlers of the county included some of it members. It is expected that over 100 will be in attendance. |
