Good Samaritans
Jack Hayes of Flora underwent two heart surgeries and was off work for a total of about a year. The outside of their house needed painting, but the family couldn't think about that while facing the surgeries and the long recovery. To help out, the Flora Lions Club, Flora Volunteer Fire Department, and the Flora and Cutler Junior Firefighters came together last Saturday to paint the house. About 20 people scraped, primed, and painted, along with some repair work. They started at 9 a.m. and finished about 4 p.m. Psi Iota Xi served lunch to the workers. Jack and his wife, Mary, were at a reunion Saturday, and returned to find a "new" house. "I was just amazed; they did an awesome job," Mary said. She added that her family has appreciated other kindnesses from the community throughout their difficult times. "You couldn't ask for a better community," she said. Jack is now back at work at Jackson-Lee- Pearson. Pictured with the hammer is Steve May. Pictured painting, l-r, are Mike Hoffman, Eric Johnson, Phil Miller, and Peter
