Delphi's 8th grade basketball team lost a 44-43 heartbreaker to Battle Ground on a lay-up at the buzzer Thursday night to take a victory away from the host Oracles.
Delphi (0-1) squandered an 11-point lead in the 4th quarter at 43-32, failing to score a point over the game's final five minutes.
Battle Ground (1-0) took advantage of several Oracle miscues in the final quarter and a crucial miss from the free-throw line on the front end of a oneand one situation in the final seconds to set up the game's final play.
The Tomahawk basket at the horn was the first time that Battle Ground had led in the game since early in the 1st quarter.
Austin Hawn led Delphi with 13 points and seven assists, shooting 6-of- 11 from the field. Dustin Salyer chipped in with 10 points, nine steals and six rebounds. Shane Hyman also added six boards to share team game-high honors.
The Oracles finished 0-of-5 from the charity stripe.
The Delphi B team (0-1) also lost to Battle Ground (1-0) by a final score of 41-27.
Clay Maxfield led the Oracles in scoring in the second game with 7 .
