National Fire Prevention Week
A day to remember Hillcrest second graders learned about fire safety during National Fire Prevention Week. After a program inside, they went outside to ride on the fire truck and go through the Smoke House. They also watched their principal, Bill Shidler, climb the aerial ladder. The inset shows a closer view of Shidler (with helmet) and Delphi firefighter Jon Randle. Comet photos by Jennifer Archibald Fire prevention program Lt. Dick Hawkins, fire safety coordinator with the Delphi Tri-Township VFD, told Hillcrest second graders how to safely exit their homes in case of a fire. He also talked about calling 911, the importance of having a fire escape plan, and having a designated place for family members to meet outside. Other firefighters, including the one pictured, assisted in the program by simulating entering a home that was on fire. Principal Bill Shidler, dressed in a firefighter uniform, also participated in the scenario. Comet photo by Jennifer Archibald |
